Overview

This index is meant to help the reader explore Biblical parallels, be they two accounts of the same event or law, stories with similar motifs and themes, or units of text which are linguistically similar and perhaps alluding one to the other. The page includes links to tools that aid in comparison, primary sources that touch upon the parallels, and summaries of and links to articles which analyze them in depth.

Law and Narrative

This chapter is an example of many instances in the Torah in which a legal section is thematically related to the surrounding narrative.

Articles

  • See Law and Narrative, by R. Jonathan Sacks, for an examination of the interweaving of halakhah and narrative in many sections of Torah, including this one. This phenomenon reflects the relationship between Hashem’s laws and the human condition. In the case of Bemidbar 19, the laws of the red heifer precede the narratives dealing with the death of Miriam and Aharon and serve to communicate a sense of continuity even within the context of human mortality.
