Bereshit 4:1-17בראשית ד׳:א׳-י״ז
(1) Now the man had known Eve, his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man with Hashem.” (2) She gave birth again, to his brother, to Abel, and Abel was a shepherd, while Cain was a tiller of the ground. (3) It happened after some years, that Cain brought an offering to Hashem from the fruit of the ground. (4) Also Abel brought of the firstborn of his flock and of its fattest, and Hashem favorably regarded Abel and his offering. (5) But He did not favorably regard Cain and his offering, and Cain was very angry, and his face fell. (6) Hashem said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? (7) If you do well, will you not be uplifted? And if you do not do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you shall rule over it.” (8) Cain spoke to Abel, his brother, and it happened that when they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him. (9) Hashem said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” (10) Hashem said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground. (11) And now, you are cursed from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. (12) When you work the ground, it will not yield its strength to you. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” (13) Cain said to Hashem, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. (14) Behold, you have driven me out this day from the surface of the ground, and I will hide from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and it will happen that whoever finds me will kill me.” (15) Hashem said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Hashem placed a sign for Cain, so that anyone who finds him should not smite him. (16) Cain went out from Hashem’s presence, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. (17) Cain knew his wife; she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. He became the builder of a city and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. (1) Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying: (2) 'Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim against it; For their wickedness is come up before Me.' (3) But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish, from the presence of the Lord. | (א) וַיְהִי דְּבַר י״י אֶל יוֹנָה בֶן אֲמִתַּי לֵאמֹר. (4) For thou didst cast me into the depth, In the heart of the seas, And the flood was round about me; All Thy waves and Thy billows Passed over me. Yonah 4יונה ד׳
(1) But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. (2) And he prayed unto the Lord, and said: 'I pray Thee, O Lord, was not this my saying, when I was yet in mine own country? Therefore I fled beforehand unto Tarshish; for I knew that Thou art a gracious God, and compassionate, long-suffering, and abundant in mercy, and repentest Thee of the evil. (3) Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech Thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.' (4) And the Lord said: 'Art thou greatly angry?' (5) Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city. (6) And the Lord God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his evil. So Jonah was exceeding glad because of the gourd. (7) But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd, that it withered. (8) And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said: 'It is better for me to die than to live.' (9) And God said to Jonah 'Art thou greatly angry for the gourd?' And he said: 'I am greatly angry, even unto death.' (10) And the Lord said: 'Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow, which came up in a night, and perished in a night; (11) and should not I have pity on Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern Between their right hand and their left hand, and also much cattle?' | (א) וַיֵּרַע אֶל יוֹנָה רָעָה גְדוֹלָה וַיִּחַר לוֹ.
