Parashat Nitzavim – Summary

  • Parashat Nitzavim focuses on the eternal nature of our covenant with God: No member of the Jewish people in any generation can ever opt out of it, and conversely, Hashem will not forsake us even when we sin, but will rather allow us to repent and return to Him and the Land of Israel.

  • Covenant with Hashem – In Chapter 29, Moshe gathers the nation to enter into a covenant with Hashem that will be binding even on future generations. Moshe warns the people of severe consequences for breaking the covenant with Hashem.
  • Repentance and Restoration – In Chapter 30, Moshe reassures the people that following their exile they will repent and Hashem will return them to the land and once again bestow His blessings upon them. The Chapter continues with the encouragement that "the mitzvah" is accessible to all and an additional warning that the choice between life and death is in our hands.
