Jubilees 5:1-5
(1) And it came to pass when the children of men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born unto them, that the angels of God saw them on a certain year of this jubilee, that they were beautiful to look upon; and they took themselves wives of all whom they chose, and they bare unto them sons and they were giants. (2) And lawlessness increased on the earth and all flesh corrupted its way, alike men and cattle and beasts and birds and everything that walketh on the earth-all of them corrupted their ways and their orders, and they began to devour each other, and lawlessness increased on the earth and every imagination of the thoughts of all men (was) thus evil continually. (3) And God looked upon the earth, and behold it was corrupt, and all flesh had corrupted its orders, and all that were upon the earth had wrought all manner of evil before His eyes. (4) And He said: "I shall destroy man and all flesh upon the face of the earth which I have created." (5) But Noah found grace before the eyes of the Lord.
(21) For owing to these three things came the flood upon the earth, namely, owing to the fornication wherein the Watchers against the law of their ordinances went a whoring after the daughters of men, and took themselves wives of all which they chose: and they made the beginning of uncleanness. (22) And they begat sons the Nâphîdîm, and they were all unlike and they devoured one another: and the Giants slew the Nâphîl, and the Nâphîl slew the Eljô, and the Eljô mankind, and one man another. (23) And every one sold himself to work iniquity and to shed much blood, and the earth was filled with iniquity. (24) And after this they sinned against the beasts and birds, and all that moveth and walketh on the earth: and much blood was shed on the earth, and every imagination and desire of men imagined vanity and evil continually. |

(12) And the Lord God saw the earth, and it was ruined, for all flesh had ruined his way upon the earth. Philo, Questions and Answers in Genesis 1:99פילון, שאלות ותשובות בספר בראשית א׳:צ״ט
What is the meaning of his saying, "All flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth?" (Genesis 6:12). In the first place, the sacred historian calls the man who is devoted to the love of himself, flesh; therefore, when he had already said he was flesh, he introduces not the same flesh, but the flesh of the same being, namely, of man, or perhaps he is speaking even of man abstractedly considered; for every one who passes a life destitute of all civilisation, and bewildered by intemperance, is flesh. In the second place, he supposes here the cause of spiritual corruption to be, as in truth it is, the flesh, because that is the seat of desire; and from it, as from a living spring, arise all the peculiar appetites, and passions, and other affections. In the third place, he very naturally says, that all flesh had corrupted his way; for "his" is a partial case, declined from the nominative case of the pronoun "he, she, or it;" for as for the being to whom we refer honour, we scarcely dare to speak of him by his own name, but we call him He. And it is from this that the principle of the Pythagorean philosophers was derived, who said, "He said it," speaking of their master in a glorious manner, since they feared to speak of him by name. And the same custom has obtained in cities and in private houses; for the servants, when speaking of the arrival of their master, say, "Here he comes;" and so when the prince of any individual city arrives, they use the same form of speech, "He comes," when they speak of him. But what is the purpose of this prolix enumeration of all these instances on my part? The truth is, that I wished to show that it is the Father of the universe who is spoken of here; since, indeed, all his good qualities, and all his marvellous names, are widely celebrated by the praise bestowed upon the virtues; and, therefore, out of reverence he has used that name more cautiously, because he was about to bring on the world the destruction of the flood; but the case of the pronoun "He" is used by way of honour in these phrases. "All flesh had corrupted His ways," inasmuch as it is truly convicted of having corrupted the way of the Father, in accordance with the lusts, and desires, and pleasures of the body; for these are the enemies and opposers of the laws of continence, and parsimony, and chastity, and fortitude, and justice; by which the road which leads to God is found out and widened, so that it should everywhere be a beaten and plain road. |
Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews 1:3:1
Now this posterity of Seth continued to esteem God as the Lord of the universe, and to have an entire regard to virtue, for seven generations; but in process of time they were perverted, and forsook the practices of their forefathers; and did neither pay those honors to God which were appointed them, nor had they any concern to do justice towards men. But for what degree of zeal they had formerly shown for virtue, they now showed by their actions a double degree of wickedness, whereby they made God to be their enemy. For many angels of God accompanied with women, and begat sons that proved unjust, and despisers of all that was good, on account of the confidence they had in their own strength; for the tradition is, that these men did what resembled the acts of those whom the Grecians call giants. But Noah was very uneasy at what they did; and being displeased at their conduct, persuaded them to change their dispositions and their acts for the better: but seeing they did not yield to him, but were slaves to their wicked pleasures, he was afraid they would kill him, together with his wife and children, and those they had married; so he departed out of that land. |
Midrash Aggadah (Buber) Bereshit 6:11
Medieval Texts
Rashi Bereshit 6:11-13
[THE EARTH] WAS CORRUPT – It means lewdness and idolatry, as (Deuteronomy 4:16) פן תשחיתון "lest ye deal corruptly" (the following words show that this refers to idolatry) and as ‘כי השחית כל בשר וגו "for all flesh had corrupted etc." (in next verse of this chapter where Rashi states that this has reference to lewdness.) AND THE EARTH WAS FILLED WITH VIOLENCE – means robbery. FOR ALL FLESH HAD CORRUPTED – even cattle, beasts and fowl did not consort with their own species. THE END OF ALL FLESH – Wherever you find lewdness and idolatry, punishment of an indiscriminate character comes upon the world killing good and bad alike. FOR THE EARTH IS FILLED WITH VIOLENCE – Their fate was sealed only on account of their sin of robbery. [I WILL DESTROY THEM] WITH THE EARTH – It is similar to מן הארץ "from the earth"; other examples of this use of את are: (Exodus 9:29) בצאתי "when I go forth" את העיר which means מן העיר "from the city" and (1 Kings 15:23) חלה "he suffered" את רגליו which means מן רגליו "from his feet". Another explanation of את הארץ is: "together with the earth" — for the earth was blotted out and washed away to the depth of a furrow of three handbreadths. |
Ibn Ezra Bereshit First Commentary 6:11
R. Yosef Bekhor Shor Bereshit 6:12
