“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Hashem your God gives you.

כַּבֵּד אֶת אָבִיךָ וְאֶת אִמֶּךָ לְמַעַן יַאֲרִכוּן יָמֶיךָ עַל הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לָךְ.

Devarim 4:40דברים ד׳:מ׳

You shall keep his statutes, and his commandments, which I command you this day, that it may go well with you, and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land, which Hashem your God gives you, forever.

וְשָׁמַרְתָּ אֶת חֻקָּיו וְאֶת מִצְוֺתָיו אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר יִיטַב לְךָ וּלְבָנֶיךָ אַחֲרֶיךָ וּלְמַעַן תַּאֲרִיךְ יָמִים עַל הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לְךָ כׇּל הַיָּמִים.

מִי יִתֵּן וְהָיָה לְבָבָם זֶה לָהֶם לְיִרְאָה אֹתִי וְלִשְׁמֹר אֶת כׇּל מִצְוֺתַי כׇּל הַיָּמִים לְמַעַן יִיטַב לָהֶם וְלִבְנֵיהֶם לְעֹלָם.

You shall walk in all the way which Hashem your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.

Devarim 6:1-3דברים ו׳:א׳-ג׳

(1) Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the ordinances, which Hashem your God commanded to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you go over to possess it; (2) that you might fear Hashem your God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, you, and your son, and your son’s son, all the days of your life; and that your days may be prolonged. (3) Hear therefore, Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with you, and that you may increase mightily, as Hashem, the God of your fathers, has promised to you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

(א) וְזֹאת הַמִּצְוָה הַחֻקִּים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה י״י אֱלֹהֵיכֶם לְלַמֵּד אֶתְכֶם לַעֲשׂוֹת בָּאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ. (ב) לְמַעַן תִּירָא אֶת י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ לִשְׁמֹר אֶת כׇּל חֻקֹּתָיו וּמִצְוֺתָיו אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוֶּךָ אַתָּה וּבִנְךָ וּבֶן בִּנְךָ כֹּל יְמֵי חַיֶּיךָ וּלְמַעַן יַאֲרִכֻן יָמֶיךָ. (ג) וְשָׁמַעְתָּ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְשָׁמַרְתָּ לַעֲשׂוֹת אֲשֶׁר יִיטַב לְךָ וַאֲשֶׁר תִּרְבּוּן מְאֹד כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר י״י אֱלֹהֵי אֲבֹתֶיךָ לָךְ אֶרֶץ זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבָשׁ.

Devarim 6:18דברים ו׳:י״ח

You shall do that which is right and good in the sight of Hashem; that it may be well with you, and that you may go in and possess the good land which Hashem swore to your fathers,

וְעָשִׂיתָ הַיָּשָׁר וְהַטּוֹב בְּעֵינֵי י״י לְמַעַן יִיטַב לָךְ וּבָאתָ וְיָרַשְׁתָּ אֶת הָאָרֶץ הַטֹּבָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע י״י לַאֲבֹתֶיךָ.

Devarim 11:8-9דברים י״א:ח׳-ט׳

(8) Therefore you shall keep all the commandment which I command you this day, that you may be strong, and go in and possess the land, where you go over to possess it; (9) and that you may prolong your days in the land, which Hashem swore to your fathers to give to them and to their seed, a land flowing with milk and honey.

(ח) וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם אֶת כׇּל הַמִּצְוָה אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם לְמַעַן תֶּחֶזְקוּ וּבָאתֶם וִירִשְׁתֶּם אֶת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ. (ט) וּלְמַעַן תַּאֲרִיכוּ יָמִים עַל הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע י״י לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם לָתֵת לָהֶם וּלְזַרְעָם אֶרֶץ זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבָשׁ.

(18) Therefore you shall lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul; and you shall bind them for a sign on your hand, and they shall be for symbols between your eyes. (19) You shall teach them your children, talking of them, when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. (20) You shall write them on the door posts of your house, and on your gates; (21) that your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which Hashem swore to your fathers to give them, as the days of the heavens above the earth.

(יח) וְשַׂמְתֶּם אֶת דְּבָרַי אֵלֶּה עַל לְבַבְכֶם וְעַל נַפְשְׁכֶם וּקְשַׁרְתֶּם אֹתָם לְאוֹת עַל יֶדְכֶם וְהָיוּ לְטוֹטָפֹת בֵּין עֵינֵיכֶם. (יט) וְלִמַּדְתֶּם אֹתָם אֶת בְּנֵיכֶם לְדַבֵּר בָּם בְּשִׁבְתְּךָ בְּבֵיתֶךָ וּבְלֶכְתְּךָ בַדֶּרֶךְ וּבְשׇׁכְבְּךָ וּבְקוּמֶךָ. (כ) וּכְתַבְתָּם עַל מְזוּזוֹת בֵּיתֶךָ וּבִשְׁעָרֶיךָ. (כא) לְמַעַן יִרְבּוּ יְמֵיכֶם וִימֵי בְנֵיכֶם עַל הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע י״י לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם לָתֵת לָהֶם כִּימֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם עַל הָאָרֶץ.

Devarim 22:6-7דברים כ״ב:ו׳-ז׳

(6) If a bird’s nest chance to be before you in the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, and the hen sitting on the young, or on the eggs, you shall not take the hen with the young: (7) you shall surely let the hen go, but the young you may take to yourself; that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days.

(ו) כִּי יִקָּרֵא קַן צִפּוֹר לְפָנֶיךָ בַּדֶּרֶךְ בְּכׇל עֵץ אוֹ עַל הָאָרֶץ אֶפְרֹחִים אוֹ בֵיצִים וְהָאֵם רֹבֶצֶת עַל הָאֶפְרֹחִים אוֹ עַל הַבֵּיצִים לֹא תִקַּח הָאֵם עַל הַבָּנִים. (ז) שַׁלֵּחַ תְּשַׁלַּח אֶת הָאֵם וְאֶת הַבָּנִים תִּקַּח לָךְ לְמַעַן יִיטַב לָךְ וְהַאֲרַכְתָּ יָמִים.

Devarim 22:7דברים כ״ב:ז׳

you shall surely let the hen go, but the young you may take to yourself; that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days.

שַׁלֵּחַ תְּשַׁלַּח אֶת הָאֵם וְאֶת הַבָּנִים תִּקַּח לָךְ לְמַעַן יִיטַב לָךְ וְהַאֲרַכְתָּ יָמִים.

You shall have a perfect and just weight. You shall have a perfect and just measure, that your days may be long in the land which Hashem your God gives you.

אֶבֶן שְׁלֵמָה וָצֶדֶק יִהְיֶה לָּךְ אֵיפָה שְׁלֵמָה וָצֶדֶק יִהְיֶה לָּךְ לְמַעַן יַאֲרִיכוּ יָמֶיךָ עַל הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לָךְ.

(47) For it is no vain thing for you; because it is your life, and through this thing you shall prolong your days in the land, where you go over the Jordan to possess it.”

(מז) כִּי לֹא דָבָר רֵק הוּא מִכֶּם כִּי הוּא חַיֵּיכֶם וּבַדָּבָר הַזֶּה תַּאֲרִיכוּ יָמִים עַל הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ.

Mishna Avot 1:3משנה אבות א׳:ג׳

"Antignos of Socho received the transmission from Shimon the Righteous. He used to say, do not be as servants who serve the Master to receive reward. Rather, be as servants who serve the Master not to receive reward. And let the fear of heaven be upon you."

אַנְטִיגְנוֹס אִישׁ סוֹכוֹ קִבֵּל מִשִּׁמְעוֹן הַצַּדִּיק. הוּא הָיָה אוֹמֵר, אַל תִּהְיוּ כַעֲבָדִים הַמְשַׁמְּשִׁין אֶת הָרַב עַל מְנָת לְקַבֵּל פְּרָס, אֶלָּא הֱווּ כַעֲבָדִים הַמְשַׁמְּשִׁין אֶת הָרַב שֶׁלֹּא עַל מְנָת לְקַבֵּל פְּרָס, וִיהִי מוֹרָא שָׁמַיִם עֲלֵיכֶם.

Mishna Avot 4:2משנה אבות ד׳:ב׳

"Ben [son of] Azzai said, run to perform [even] a minor mitzvah (commandment) and flee from sin, for one mitzvah leads to another mitzvah, and one sin leads to another sin; for the reward of a mitzvah is a mitzvah and the 'reward' of a sin is a sin."

בֶּן עַזַּאי אוֹמֵר, הֱוֵי רָץ לְמִצְוָה קַלָּה כְבַחֲמוּרָה, וּבוֹרֵחַ מִן הָעֲבֵרָה. שֶׁמִּצְוָה גּוֹרֶרֶת מִצְוָה, וַעֲבֵרָה גוֹרֶרֶת עֲבֵרָה. שֶׁשְּׂכַר מִצְוָה, מִצְוָה. וּשְׂכַר עֲבֵרָה, עֲבֵרָה.

Mishna Avot 4:5משנה אבות ד׳:ה׳

"Rabbi Yishmael bar [son of] Rabbi Yossi said, one who studies Torah in order to teach is granted the ability to study and to teach. One who studies in order to 'do' is granted the ability to study, to teach, to observe, and to do." "Rabbi Tzaddok said, do not separate yourself from the community. Do not act as a lawyer (in judgment). Do not make the Torah into a crown with which to aggrandize yourself or a spade with which to dig. So too did Hillel state: 'He who uses the crown [of Torah] will pass on' (above, 1:13). From this you may learn that anyone who derives benefit from words of Torah takes his life from the world."

רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל בְּנוֹ אוֹמֵר, הַלּוֹמֵד תּוֹרָה עַל מְנָת לְלַמֵּד, מַסְפִּיקִין בְּיָדוֹ לִלְמֹד וּלְלַמֵּד. וְהַלּוֹמֵד עַל מְנָת לַעֲשׂוֹת, מַסְפִּיקִין בְּיָדוֹ לִלְמֹד וּלְלַמֵּד לִשְׁמֹר וְלַעֲשׂוֹת. רַבִּי צָדוֹק אוֹמֵר, אַל תַּעֲשֵׂם עֲטָרָה לְהִתְגַּדֵּל בָּהֶם, וְלֹא קַרְדֹּם לַחְפֹּר בָּהֶם. וְכָךְ הָיָה הִלֵּל אוֹמֵר, וּדְאִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בְּתָגָא, חָלָף. הָא לָמַדְתָּ, כָּל הַנֶּהֱנֶה מִדִּבְרֵי תוֹרָה, נוֹטֵל חַיָּיו מִן הָעוֹלָם.

Sifre Devarim 11:22ספרי דברים י״א:כ״ב

"to love the Lord your G-d": Lest you say: I will learn in order to sit in sessions; so that I merit eternal life in the world to come; it is, therefore, written "to love the Lord your G-d" — Learn in any event; honor will come as a matter of course. And thus is it written (Proverbs 4:12) "For they (words of Torah) are life to those who find them, and to all his flesh, healing," and (Ibid. 3:18) "It (Torah) is a tree of life to those who hold fast to it, and happy are those who uphold it," and (Ibid. 4:9) "It will give your head an ornament of grace": in this world; "a crown of glory will it accord you": in the world to come. R. Eliezer b. R. Tzaddok says: "Do things (mitzvoth) for the sake of doing them, and speak of them for their own sakes." And thus does Hillel say: "One who makes use of the 'Crown' (for his own purposes) passes away" (from the world.) And thus was he wont to say: "Now if Belshazzar, who made use of the Temple vessels, which were chol (i.e., mundane), was uprooted from this world and the world to come, how much more so, one who makes use of (i.e., exploits) the vessel (Torah) with which this world and the world to come were created!"

לאהבה את י״י אלהיכם – שמא תאמר הריני אלמד תורה בשביל שאקרא חכם, בשביל שאשב בישיבה, בשביל שאאריך ימים לעולם הבא? תלמוד לומר: לאהבה את י״י אלהיכם למוד מכל מקום וסוף הכבוד לבא. וכן הוא אומר: כי חיים הם למוצאיהם ולכל בשרו מרפא (משלי ד׳:כ״ב). ואומר: עץ חיים היא למחזיקים בה ותמכיה מאושר (משלי ג׳:י״ח). ואומר: תתן לראשך לוית חן (משלי ד׳:ט׳). לוית חן – בעולם הזה. עטרת תפארת תמגנך – לעולם הבא. ואומר: אורך ימים בימינה ובשמאלה עושר וכבוד בעולם הזה (משלי ג׳). רבי אלעזר ברבי צדוק אומר: עשה דברים לשם פעולתם, דבר בהם לשמן. וכן הוא היה אומר: ומה בלשצר שנשתמש בכלי בית המקדש וכלי חול הוו, נעקרו חייו מן העולם הזה ומן העולם הבא, המשתמש בכלי שבו נברא העולם הזה והעולם הבא על אחת כמה וכמה שנעקרו חייו מן העולם הזה זה ומן העולם הבא.

The verse continues: “He delights greatly in His mitzvot.” Rabbi Elazar says: The person delights in His mitzvot themselves and not in the reward for performing His mitzvot. And this is the same as we learned in a mishna (Avot 1:3): Antigonus of Sokho would say: Do not be like the servants who serve the master on the condition of receiving a reward; rather, be like the servants who serve the master not on the condition that they receive a reward
