R. Saadia Gaon Commentary Bereshit 19:23
Rashi Bereshit 32:9רש״י בראשית ל״ב:ט׳
המחנה האחת והכהו TO THE ONE CAMP AND SMITE IT – The word מחנה is treated grammatically as masculine or feminine: in (Psalms 27:3) "Though a camp should encamp (תחנה) against me" it is feminine; in (Genesis 33:8) "this (הזה) camp" it is masculine. Similarly there are other words treated grammatically as both masculine and feminine. For example, the word שמש in (Psalms 19:23) "The sun was risen (יצא) upon the earth" and in (Psalms 19:7) "His (the sun's) going forth (מוצאו) is from the end of the heaven"; here it is masculine, but in (2 Kings 3:22) "and the sun shone (זרחה) upon the water" it is feminine. Similarly with רוח: in (Job 1:19) "and behold there came (באה) a great wind" it is feminine, and in the same verse "and smote (ויגע) the four corners of the house" it is masculine; in (1 Kings 19:11) "and a great (גדולה) and strong (וחזק) wind rent (מפרק) the mountains" it is both masculine and feminine. So also in the case of אש: in (Numbers 16:35) "and fire came forth (יצאה) from the Lord" it is feminine, and in (Psalms 104:4) "The flaming (להט) fire" it is masculine. והיה המחנה הנשאר לפליטה THEN THE REMAINING CAMP MAY ESCAPE in spite of him, for I will fight against him He prepared himself for three things: to give him a present — as it states (Genesis 32:22) "So, the present passed before him"; for prayer — as it states (Genesis 32:10), "And he said, 'O God of my father Abraham"; for war — as it states in this verse, "then the remaining camp may escape", for I will fight against him (Tanchuma Yashan 1:8:6).

ITS COLUMNS AND ITS SOCKETS – עמדיו has a masculine and אדניה a feminine suffix; thus חצר is here used as (lit., called) masculine and feminine noun. Similar it is with many things (cf. Rashi on Genesis 32:9). ואת מסך שער החצר AND THE SCREEN FOR THE GATE OF THE ENCLOSURE – the curtain which was hanging on the east side covering the twenty middle cubits in the width of the enclosure which latter was fifty cubits wide. Of this fifteen cubits on the north side were closed by hangings and so, too, on the south side, as it is said, (Exodus 27:14, 15) "The hangings of one side of the gate shall be fifteen cubits … [and on the other side shall be hangings fifteen cubits]". | את עמודיו ואת אדניה – הרי חצר קרוי כאן לשון זכר ולשון נקבה, וכן דברים הרבה. |

Eating in Shilo. The 'ה' is not dotted and the 'א' is voweled with a short kametz and its [meaning is] 'after eating in Shilo and after drinking,' and this expression is properly used both for masculine and feminine. After אָכְלָה is a gerund. It is constructed like ,לְאָכְלָה an expression equivalent to an infinitive [i.e., לֶאֶכוֹל]. And Eili the kohen was sitting on the chair. On that day he was seated on a large chair, for he was appointed Judge over Yisroel. Near the doorpost. [Lit. on the doorpost] meaning near the doorpost. | אכלה בשילה – לא מפיק ה״א, והאל״ף חטף קמ״ץ, והוא כמו: אחרי אכול בשילה ואחרי שתה. והלשון נופל בין לזכר בין לנקבה, אחרי אכלה – לשון פעול, כמו: לאכלה – לשון לפעול. ועלי הכהן ישב על הכסא – אותו היום ישב על כסא גדול, שנתמנה שופט על ישראל. על מזוזת – כמו: אצל מזוזת. |

Set on a straight course. This word is a grammatical hermaphrodite. This teaches us that even the young recited a song, "Sing aloud, sing aloud, O Ark of acacia wood! Exalt yourself…" as stated in Maseches Avodah Zorah. According to its simple meaning, 'וַיִשַּׁרְנָה' is an expression meaning 'straight,' i.e. they followed a straight path. Lowing as they walked. This is an expression of the cry [גְּעִיָה] of cattle. Beis Shemesh. Yisroel was there. | וישרנה – הרי תיבה זו אנדרוגינוס, מלמד שאף הוולדות היו אומרים שירה: רוני רוני השיטה התנופפי וכו׳, כדאיתא במסכת עבודה זרה (בבלי ע״ז כ״ד:). ולפי פשוטו: וישרנה – לשון ישר דרך, ישר היו הולכות. הלך וגעו – לשון צעקת בקר, געייה. בית שמש – ישראל היו שם. |

a profligate beast The boar out of the forest (80:14). There is none as profligate among the beasts as the boar, and also "the lions from his thicket" (Jer. 4:7), i.e., Nebuchadnezzar, shall not be found there. nor shall...ascend thereon On that road (הַדֶּרֶךְ). The word דֶּרֶךְ is used both as masculine and feminine gender, as it is written (Ex. 18:20): "The way (הַדֶּרֶךְ) upon which (בָּהּ) they shall walk." (Lit., on her.) Thus it is feminine. Comp. (Deut. 28:7) "In one road (בַּדֶּרֶךְ אֶחָד) they shall come out to you." Thus it is masculine. it shall not be found any wild beast there. | בל יעלנה – לאותה הדרך. דרך משמש לשון זכר ולשון נקבה, כמדתמר: את הדרך אשר ילכו בה (נחמיה ט׳:י״ב) – הרי נקבה, בדרך אחד יצאו אליך (דברים כ״ח:ז׳) – הרי לשון זכר. ולא תמצא – חיה רעה שם. |

Radak Tehillim 3:3רד״ק תהלים ג׳:ג׳
Many there are which say of my soul (לנפשי) – that is, "about my soul," as "Say concerning me (לי), He is my brother" (Gen. xx. 13) ; "and the men of the place asked of his wife (לאשתו)" (ibid. xxvi. 7), and such like. And the reason: because many of the wise ones of Israel, as Ahithophel and others, were of opinion that this punishment came to him on account of the affair of Bathsheba, as was actually the case ; and they were thinking likewise that the kingdom would never return to him ; therefore they followed Absalom and rebelled against him, and were saying that for him there was no portion in the world to come. Therefore he says of my soul. And he says: There is no salvation (ישועתה) for him in God – There is no salvation for him in this world, for he cannot escape from the hand of Absalom, neither is there salvation for his soul in the world to come. For this reason it is that he uses the intensive form ישועתה ["salvation"], his meaning being salvation and salvation ; for every reduplication of ending is (equivalent) to a duplication of meaning ; and in like manner (we have) עזרתה (Ps. xliv. 27 ; lxiii. 8 ; xciv. 17) (meaning) "great help" ; תבואתה (Deut. xxxiii. 16) ; נפלאתה (2 Sam. i. 26) החבאתה (Josh. vi. 17) as I have written in the grammatical part of the book Miklol. And so in the Haggadic interpretation (Shoher Tob, ad loc.) it says: "Great ones are saying, i.e. (men) great in the Torah . . . Doeg the Ab beth Din it was of whom it is said 'chiefest of Saul's shepherds' (1 Sam. xxi. 8) ; 'And Ahithophel was counsellor' (1 Chron. xxvii. 33) ; 'and the counsel of Ahithophel which he counselled in those days was as if a man inquired at the oracle of God' (2 Sam. xvi. 23). And what was it they were saying? 'Is it possible! The man who took captive the ewe–lamb and slew the shepherd and caused Israel to fall by the sword, shall there be salvation for him ? There is no salvation for him in God!'" Selah – The majority of commentators say of the word Selah that it is equivalent to לעולם ("for ever"); and so Jonathan renders it in the Prayer of Habakkuk (iii. 3, 9, 13) for ever (לעלמין). And in this sense the word is common in our prayers. And the learned Rabbi Abraham ben Ezra – may the memory of the just be blessed ! – has interpreted (ad loc.) that it is equivalent to אמת (truth). For myself, I say it is not a significant word. And it is to be interpreted as having the meaning "lifting up" (of the musical accompaniment) from (the passage) "cast up, cast up (סלו) the way" (Is. Ixii. 10), signifying that at the point where this word is mentioned and read there was a raising of the sound of the music (מזמור). And the proof is in the fact that it is not found except in this book and in the Prayer of Habakkuk, which was a song (accompanied by music), as is written also there (iii. 19), "For the chief musician on my stringed instruments." |
