(1) And he arose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city. (2) Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest; and Ahimelech came to meet David trembling, and said unto him: 'Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?' (3) And David said unto Ahimelech the priest: 'The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me: Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee; and the young men have I appointed to such and such a place. (4) Now therefore what is under thy hand? five loaves of bread? give them in my hand, or whatsoever there is present.' (5) And the priest answered David, and said: 'There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.' (6) And David answered the priest, and said unto him: 'Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days; when I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was but a common journey; how much more then to-day, when there shall be holy bread in their vessels?' (7) So the priest gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before the Lord, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.โ (8) Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was Doeg the Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul.โ (9) And David said unto Ahimelech: 'Andis there peradventure here under thy hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste.' (10) And the priest said: 'The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the vale of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod; if thou wilt take that, take it; for there is no other save that here.' And David said: 'There is none like that; give it me.' (11) And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.
(11) And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath. (12) And the servants of Achish said unto him: 'Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying: Saul hath slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands?' (13) And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath. (14) And he changed his demeanour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard. (15) Then said Achish unto his servants: 'Lo, when ye see a man that is mad, wherefore do ye bring him to me? (16) Do I lack madmen, that ye have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?'
(9) Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who was set over the servants of Saul, and said: 'I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. (10) And he inquired of the Lord for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.' (11) Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob; and they came all of them to the king. (12) And Saulsaid: 'Hear now, thou son of Ahitub.' And he answered: 'Here I am, my lord.' (13) And Saul said unto him: 'Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?' (14) Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said: 'And who among all thy servants is so trusted as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and giveth heed unto thy bidding, and is honourable in thy house? (15) Have I to-day begun to inquire of God for him? be it far from me; let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for thy servant knoweth nothing of all this, less or more.' (16) And the king said: 'Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house.' (17) And the king said unto the guard that stood about him: 'Turn, and slay the priests of the Lord; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled, and did not disclose it to me.' But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the Lord. (18) And the king said to Doeg: 'Turn thou, and fall upon the priests.' And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and he slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. (15) Thus saith the Lord, the God of hosts: Go, get thee unto this steward, Even unto Shebna, who is over the house: (16) What hast thou here, and whom hast thou here, That thou hast hewed thee out here a sepulchre, Thou that hewest thee out a sepulchre on high, And gravest a habitation for thyself in the rock? (17) Behold, the Lord will hurl thee up and down with a man's throw; Yea, He will wind thee round and round; (18) He will violently roll and toss thee like a ball into a large country; There shalt thou die, and there shall be the chariots of thy glory, Thou shame of the lord's house. (19) And I will thrust thee from thy post, And from thy station shalt thou be pulled down. (20) And it shall come to pass in that day, That I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah; (21) And I will clothe him with thy robe, And bind him with thy girdle, And I will commit thy government into his hand; And he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. (22) And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; And he shall open, and none shall shut; And he shall shut, and none shall open. (23) And I will fasten him as a peg in a sure place; And he shall be for a throne of honour to his father's house. (24) And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father's house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from the vessels of cups even to all the vessels of flagons. (25) In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall the peg that was fastened in a sure place give way; and it shall be hewn down, and fall, and the burden that was upon it shall be cut off; for the Lord hath spoken it.
(1) Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help, And rely on horses, And trust in chariots, because they are many, And in horsemen, because they are exceeding mighty; But they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, Neither seek the Lord! (2) Yet He also is wise, And bringeth evil, And doth not call back His words; But will arise against the house of the evil-doers, And against the help of them that work iniquity. (3) Now the Egyptians are men, and not God, And their horses flesh, and not spirit; So when the Lord shall stretch out His hand, Both he that helpeth shall stumble, and he that is helped shall fall, And they all shall perish together. (4) For thus saith the Lord unto me: Like as the lion, or the young lion, growling over his prey, Though a multitude of shepherds be called forth against him, Will not be dismayed at their voice, Nor abase himself for the noise of them; So will the Lord of hosts come down To fight upon mount Zion, and upon the hill thereof. (5) As birds hovering, So will the Lord of hosts protect Jerusalem; He will deliver it as He protecteth it, He will rescue it as He passeth over. (6) Turn ye unto Him Against whom ye have deeply rebelled, O children of Israel. (7) For in that day they shall cast away Every man his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, Which your own hands have made unto you for a sin. (8) Then shall Asshur fall with the sword, not of man, And the sword, not of men, shall devour him; And he shall flee from the sword, And his young men shall become tributary. (9) And his rock shall pass away by reason of terror, And his princes shall be dismayed at the ensign, Saith the Lord, whose fire is in Zion, And His furnace in Jerusalem. (1) 'O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, For His mercy endureth for ever.' (2) So let the redeemed of the Lord say, Whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the adversary; (3) And gathered them out of the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the sea. (4) They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way; They found no city of habitation. (5) Hungry and thirsty, Their soul fainted in them. (6) Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, And He delivered them out of their distresses. (7) And He led them by a straight way, That they might go to a city of habitation. (8) Let them give thanks unto the Lord for His mercy, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! (9) For He hath satisfied the longing soul, And the hungry soul He hath filled with good. (10) Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, Being bound in affliction and ironโ (11) Because they rebelled against the words of God, And contemned the counsel of the Most High. (12) Therefore He humbled their heart with travail, They stumbled, and there was none to helpโ (13) They cried unto the Lord in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses. (14) He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, And broke their bands in sunder. (15) Let them give thanks unto the Lord for His mercy, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! (16) For He hath broken the gates of brass, And cut the bars of iron in sunder. (17) Crazed because of the way of their transgression, And afflicted because of their iniquitiesโ (18) Their soul abhorred all manner of food, And they drew near unto the gates of deathโ (19) They cried unto the Lord in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses; (20) He sent His word, and healed them, And delivered them from their graves. (21) Let them give thanks unto the Lord for His mercy, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! (22) And let them offer the sacrifices of thanksgiving, And declare His works with singing. (23) They that go down to the sea in ships, That do business in great watersโ (24) These saw the works of the Lord, And His wonders in the deep; (25) For He commanded, and raised the stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves thereof; (26) They mounted up to the heaven, they went down to the deeps; Their soul melted away because of trouble; (27) They reeled to and fro, and staggered like a drunken man, And all their wisdom was swallowed upโ (28) They cried unto the Lord in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. (29) He made the storm a calm, So that the waves thereof were still. (30) Then were they glad because they were quiet, And He led them unto their desired haven. (31) Let them give thanks unto the Lord for His mercy, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! (32) Let them exalt Him also in the assembly of the people, And praise Him in the seat of the elders. (33) He turneth rivers into a wilderness, And watersprings into a thirsty ground; (34) A fruitful land into a salt waste, For the wickedness of them that dwell therein. (35) He turneth a wilderness into a pool of water, And a dry land into watersprings. (36) And there He maketh the hungry to dwell, And they establish a city of habitation; (37) And sow fields, and plant vineyards, Which yield fruits of increase. (38) He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly, And suffereth not their cattle to decrease. (39) Again, they are minished and dwindle away Through oppression of evil and sorrow. (40) He poureth contempt upon princes, And causeth them to wander in the waste, where there is no way. (41) Yet setteth He the needy on high from affliction, And maketh his families like a flock. (42) The upright see it, and are glad; And all iniquity stoppeth her mouth. (1) I love that the Lord should hear My voice and my supplications. (2) Because He hath inclined His ear unto me, Therefore will I call upon Him all my days. (3) The cords of death compassed me, And the straits of the nether-world got hold upon me; I found trouble and sorrow. (4) But I called upon the name of the Lord: 'I beseech thee, O Lord, deliver my soul.' (5) Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; Yea, our God is compassionate. (6) The Lord preserveth the simple; I was brought low, and He saved me. (7) Return, O my soul, unto Thy rest; For the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee. (8) For thou hast delivered my soul from death, Mine eyes from tears, And my feet from stumbling. (9) I shall walk before the Lord In the lands of the living. (10) I trusted even when I spoke: 'I am greatly afflicted.' (11) I said in my haste: 'All men are liars.' (12) How can I repay unto the Lord All His bountiful dealings toward me? (13) I will lift up the cup of salvation, And call upon the name of the Lord. (14) My vows will I pay unto the Lord, Yea, in the presence of all His people. (15) Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His saints. (16) I beseech Thee, O Lord, for I am Thy servant; I am Thy servant, the son of Thy handmaid; Thou hast loosed my bands. (17) I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, And will call upon the name of the Lord. (18) I will pay my vows unto the Lord, Yea, in the presence of all His people; (19) In the courts of the Lord's house, In the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Hallelujah. (1) 'O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, For His mercy endureth for ever. (2) So let Israel now say, For His mercy endureth for ever, (3) So let the house of Aaron now say, For His mercy endureth for ever. (4) So let them now that fear the Lord say, For His mercy endureth for ever. (5) Out of my straits I called upon the Lord; He answered me with great enlargement. (6) The Lord is for me; I will not fear; What can man do unto me? (7) The Lord is for me as my helper; And I shall gaze upon them that hate me. (8) It is better to take refuge in the Lord Than to trust in man. (9) It is better to take refuge in the Lord Than to trust in princes. (10) All nations compass me about; Verily, in the name of the Lord I will cut them off. (11) They compass me about, yea, they compass me about; Verily, in the name of the Lord I will cut them off. (12) They compass me about like bees; They are quenched as the fire of thorns; Verily, in the name of the Lord I will cut them off. (13) Thou didst thrust sore at me that I might fall; But the Lord helped me. (14) The Lord is my strength and song; And He is become my salvation. (15) The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tents of the righteous; The right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly. (16) The right hand of the Lord is exalted; The right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly. (17) I shall not die, but live, And declare the works of the Lord. (18) The Lord hath chastened me sore; But He hath not given me over unto death. (19) Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will enter into them, I will give thanks unto the Lord. (20) This is the gate of the Lord; The righteous shall enter into it. (21) I will give thanks unto Thee, for Thou hast answered me, And art become my salvation. (22) The stone which the builders rejected Is become the chief corner-stone. (23) This is the Lord's doing; It is marvellous in our eyes. (24) This is the day which the Lord hath made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. (25) We beseech Thee, O Lord, save now! We beseech Thee, O Lord, make us now to prosper! (26) Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord; We bless you out of the house of the Lord. (27) The Lord is God, and hath given us light; Order the festival procession with boughs, even unto the horns of the altar.
Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: Four must offer thanks to God with a thanks-offering and a special blessing. They are: Seafarers, those who walk in the desert, and one who was ill and recovered, and one who was incarcerated in prison and went out. All of these appear in the verses of a psalm (Psalms 107). The Gemara elaborates: From where do we derive that seafarers are required to thank God? โThey who go down to the sea in ships, who do business in great waters; they see the works of the Lordโ (Psalms 107:23โ24). And it says: โFor He commands and raises the stormy wind which lifts up the waves thereof. They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of troubleโ (Psalms 107:25โ26). And it says: โThey reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their witsโ end.โ And it says immediately thereafter: โThen they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distressโ (Psalms 107:28). And it says: โHe makes the storm calm, so the waves thereof are stillโ (Psalms 107:29), and it says: โThen are they glad because they be quiet; so He brings them unto their desired havenโ (Psalms 107:30), and it says: โThey are grateful to God for His loving-kindness and His wonders for mankindโ (Psalms 107:31). The Gemara asks: From where do we derive that those who walk in the desert are required to thank God? The Gemara answers: As it is written in the same psalm: โThey wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city in which to dwellโ (Psalms 107:4), โAnd then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their distresses. And He led them forth by the right wayโ (Psalms 107:6โ7). After God guides them on the right way, it is said: โThey are grateful to God for His goodnessโ (Psalms 107:8). That one who was ill and recovered must offer thanks is derived, as it is written: โFools, because of their transgression and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. Their soul abhors all manner of meat and they draw near unto the gates of deathโ (Psalms 107:17โ18), and: โThen they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and He saves them from their distressโ (Psalms 107:19), and then: โHe sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructionsโ (Psalms 107:20). After they are healed: โThey are grateful to God for His goodnessโ (Psalms 107:21). From where do we derive that one who was incarcerated in prison must offer thanks? As it is written: โSuch as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, bound in affliction and iron. Because they rebelled against the words of God and scorned the counsel of the most Highโ (Psalms 107:10โ11). And it says: โTherefore He brought down their heart with labor; they fell down, and there was none to helpโ (Psalms 107:12), and it says: โThen they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them from their distressesโ (Psalms 107:13), and it says: โHe brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke their shacklesโ (Psalms 107:14). And after God takes them out from that darkness and shadow of death, it says: โThey are grateful to God for His goodness. |
Bavli Pesachim 117a
Rav Yehuda said that Shmuel said: The song in the Torah, i.e., the Song at the Sea (Exodus 15:1โ19), Moses and the Jewish people recited it when they ascended from the sea. The Gemara asks: And who said this hallel mentioned in the mishna, Psalms 113โ118? The Gemara answers: The Prophets among them established this hallel for the Jewish people, that they should recite it on every appropriate occasion; and for every trouble, may it not come upon them, they recite the supplications included in hallel. When they are redeemed, they recite it over their redemption, as hallel includes expressions of gratitude for the redemption. It was taught in a baraita that Rabbi Meir would say: All the praises stated in the book of Psalms were recited by David, as it is stated: โThe prayers of David, son of Yishai, are ended [kalu]โ (Psalms 72:20). Do not read kalu; rather, read kol elu, all of these, which indicates that the entire book of Psalms consists of the prayers of King David. The Gemara clarifies: According to those who dispute Rabbi Meirโs claim that the entire book of Psalms was composed by King David, who recited this hallel? Rabbi Yosei says: My son Elazar says that Moses and the Jewish people recited it when they ascended from the sea. And his colleagues dispute him, saying that it was recited by King David. And the statement of my son, Elazar, appears more accurate than their statement. The reason is as follows: Is it possible that the Jewish people slaughtered their Paschal lambs and took and waved their lulavim all those generations without reciting a song? Rather, the Jews must have recited a song each year. Since it is the custom to sing hallel nowadays, it is evidently an ancient institution. Alternatively, is it possible that Micahโs idol stood in tears, and the Jewish people were reciting hallel before it? The reference is to the idol of Micah, which was still standing in the days of David (see Judges 17). The Gemara states that the idol was crying, as a euphemism for its laughter, to avoid shaming the Jewish people (geโonim). The point is that the Jews would not have chanted: โThey who make them shall be like themโ (Psalms 115:8) at a time that they were worshipping idols. Rather, hallel must be older than that, and it dates back to the Song at the Sea. The Sages taught in a baraita that with regard to all the songs and praise that David recited in the book of Psalms, Rabbi Eliezer says: David said them about himself. They were the praises of an individual that were later transmitted to the community. Rabbi Yehoshua says: He originally said them about the community. He composed all of the psalms for the people, including those he wrote about himself. And the Rabbis say: There are among these psalms some that are about the community, and there are among these psalms some that are about himself. The Rabbis clarify their opinion: The psalms that are stated in the singular form are about himself, and those stated in the plural form are about the community. The Gemara continues to discuss the book of Psalms. If a psalm begins with the terms nitzuaแธฅ or niggun, this indicates that its praise will be fulfilled in the future. Psalms that begin with the word maskil were delivered by means of a disseminator, a spokesman in a public address. The lecturer would speak softly, followed by a repetition of his discourse in the disseminatorโs louder voice, so that everyone could hear. If a psalm begins: Of David a psalm, this teaches that the Divine Presence rested upon him first and afterward he recited the song. However, if a psalm opens with: A psalm of David, this teaches that he first recited the song, and afterward the Divine Presence rested upon him. The Gemara adds: Incidentally, this serves to teach you that the Divine Presence rests upon an individual neither from an atmosphere of sadness, nor from an atmosphere of laziness, nor from an atmosphere of laughter, nor from an atmosphere of frivolity, nor from an atmosphere of idle conversation, nor from an atmosphere of idle chatter, but rather from an atmosphere imbued with the joy of a mitzva. As it is stated with regard to Elisha, after he became angry at the king of Israel, his prophetic spirit left him until he requested: โBut now bring me a minstrel; and it came to pass when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon himโ (II Kings 3:15). Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: And, so too, one should be joyful before stating a matter of halakha. Rav Naแธฅman said: And, so too, one should be joyful before going to sleep, to ensure he will have a good dream. The Gemara asks: Is that so, that one should introduce matters of halakha joyfully? Didnโt Rav Giddel say that Rav said: Any Torah scholar who sits before his teacher and his lips are not dripping with bitterness due to fear of his teacher, those lips shall be burned, as it is stated: โHis lips are as lilies [shoshanim] dripping with flowing myrrh [notefot mor over]โ (Song of Songs 5:13). He interpreted homiletically: Do not read it as shoshanim, lilies; rather, read it as sheshonim, who are studying. Likewise, do not read it as mor over, flowing myrrh; rather, read it as mar over, flowing bitterness. In other words, lips that are studying Torah must be full of bitterness. The Gemara explains: This is not difficult; there is no contradiction here, as this statement, which teaches that one should introduce matters of halakha joyfully, is referring to a rabbi, and that statement, which teaches that one must be filled with bitterness, is referring to a student, who must listen to his teacher with trepidation. And if you wish, say instead that this and that are referring to a rabbi, and it is not difficult. This statement, where it is taught that one must be joyful, is before one begins teaching; that statement, where it is taught that he must be filled with bitterness and trepidation, is after he already began teaching halakha. The Gemara adds: That explanation is like that practice of Rabbaโs. Before he began teaching halakha to the Sages, he would say some humorous comment, and the Sages would be cheered. Ultimately, he sat in trepidation and began teaching the halakha. The Sages taught: This hallel, who initially recited it? Rabbi Eliezer says: Moses and the Jewish people recited it when they stood by the sea. They said: โNot to us, God, not to us, but to Your name give gloryโ (Psalms 115:1). The Divine Spirit responded and said to them: โFor My own sake, for My own sake, will I do itโ (Isaiah 48:11). Rabbi Yehuda says: Joshua and the Jewish people recited it when they defeated the kings of Canaan who stood against them (see Joshua 12:7โ24). They said: Not to us, and the Divine Spirit responded: For My own sake. Rabbi Elazar HaModaโi says: Deborah and Barak recited it when Sisera stood against them (see Judges 4โ5). They said: Not to us, and the Divine Spirit responded and said to them: For My own sake, for My own sake, will I do it. Rabbi Elazar ben Azarya says: Hezekiah and his company recited it when Sennacherib stood against them (see II Kings 18โ19). They said: Not to us and the Divine Spirit responded: For My own sake. Rabbi Akiva says: Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah recited it when the wicked Nebuchadnezzar stood against them (see Daniel 3). They said: Not to us, and the Divine Spirit responded: For My own sake. Rabbi Yosei HaGelili says: Mordecai and Esther recited it when the wicked Haman stood against them. They said: Not to us, and the Divine Spirit responded: For My own sake (see the book of Esther). And the Rabbis say that hallel was not established for any specific event, but the Prophets among them instituted that the Jewish people should recite it on every appropriate occasion, and for every trouble, may it not come upon the Jewish people. When they are redeemed, they recite it over their redemption. |

Rabbi Shmuel bar Naแธฅmani said that Rabbi Yonatan said that David recited: โI will give thanks to You, for You have answered meโ (Psalms 118:21), with regard to the success of his reign. Yishai recited: โThe stone which the builders rejected has become the chief keystoneโ (Psalms 118:22). The brothers of David recited: โThis is the Lordโs doing; it is marvelous in our eyesโ (Psalms 118:23). Samuel the Prophet recited: โThis is the day which the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in itโ (Psalms 118:24). The brothers of David recited: โWe beseech You, Lord, save nowโ (Psalms 118:25). David recited: โWe beseech You, Lord, make us prosper nowโ (Psalms 118:25). Yishai recited: โBlessed be he who comes in the name of the Lordโ (Psalms 118:26). Samuel recited: โWe bless you out of the house of the Lordโ (Psalms 118:26). They all recited: โThe Lord is God, and has given us lightโ (Psalms 118:27). Samuel recited: โOrder the Festival procession with boughs, even to the horns of the altarโ (Psalms 118:27). David recited: โYou are my God, and I will give thanks to Youโ (Psalms 118:28). The Gemara asks: What is the source of the halakha that a conspiracy of wicked people is not counted as part of a group? The Gemara answers: Shebna, a steward and a minister in King Hezekiahโs court, was a prominent and influential figure. He would teach Torah to an audience of 130,000 followers, whereas King Hezekiah would teach Torah to an audience of merely 110,000 followers. When Sennacherib came and besieged Jerusalem, Shebna wrote a note and shot it over the wall with an arrow. It read: Shebna and his camp have appeased Sennacherib and are ready to surrender; Hezekiah and his camp have not appeased Sennacherib. As it is stated in allusion to this incident: โFor behold, the wicked bend the bow, they have made ready their arrow upon the stringโ (Psalms 11:2). Hezekiah was afraid. He said: Perhaps, God forbid, the opinion of the Holy One, Blessed be He, will follow the majority; and since the majority have submitted to the Assyrians, even those who have not submitted will also be submitted into their hands. The prophet Isaiah then came and said to him: โSay not: A conspiracy, concerning all of which this people say: A conspiracyโ (Isaiah 8:12). Meaning, it is a conspiracy of wicked people, and a conspiracy of wicked people is not counted. Therefore, although they are many, they are not considered the majority. Shebna went to carve out a grave for himself among the graves of the house of David, as he thought that the kingship would be given to him. The prophet Isaiah then came and said to him: โWhat have you here, and whom have you here, that you have carved out a grave for yourself here? You, who have carved yourself out a grave on high, and hollowed a habitation for yourself in the rock? Behold, the Lord will make you wander like the wandering of a man; and he will wind you round and roundโ (Isaiah 22:16โ17). |

This is because the Holy One, Blessed be He, sought to designate King Hezekiah as the Messiah and to designate Sennacherib and Assyria, respectively, as Gog and Magog, all from the prophecy of Ezekiel with regard to the end of days (Ezekiel, chapter 38), and the confrontation between them would culminate in the final redemption. The attribute of justice said before the Holy One, Blessed be He: Master of the Universe, and if with regard to David, king of Israel, who recited several songs and praises before You, You did not designate him as the Messiah, then with regard to Hezekiah, for whom You performed all these miracles, delivering him from Sennacherib and healing his illness, and he did not recite praise before You, will You designate him as the Messiah? |
