Rashbam Bemidbar 20:8
TAKE THE STAFF: From before the Pact. SPEAK TO THE ROCK [TO YIELD ITS WATERS]: The reason that God commanded [them] to take the staff was not because He wanted them [to use the staff in order] to hit the rock, as he had done in Rephidim, where it says (Ex. 17:6), "Strike the rock and water will issue from it." Rather He told them to take the staff in order to serve as a visual reminder of their stubborn rebelliousness, as it is written: [the staff was] (17:25), "to be kept as a lesson to the rebels." But it is through speech – talking to the rock – [that they were] to get the rock to yield its waters. [That is the meaning of] YOU SHALL BRING OUT WATER FROM THE ROCK – i.e. by talked to the rock. |
