<p>Moshe's sin in striking the rock, as described in Bemidbar 20, has fascinated readers throughout the centuries.  Both Tissot's painting<fn>James Tissot (1836-1902) was a French painter who spent the later part of his career painting Biblical scenes. In the last years of his life he focused on material from the Old Testament, many of which were exhibited in Paris in the year before his death. The piece shown here is currently housed in the Jewish Museum, New York.</fn>  and the engraving from the LaHaye Bible<fn>The illustration is part of a collection of 242 images illustrated by Gerard Hoet and others, entitled "Figures de la Bible." <p>While Tissot's figures appear to be not particularly bothered by the lack of water, the characters of the etching rush to the stream, thirstily lapping up the sought after water.  The difference raises a question regarding the original episode - How legitimate was the nation's grumbling for water?  Were they really dying of thirst, or was this similar to other incidents in which their complaints were not justified?  The text does say that there was lack of water, but many commentators, nonetheless, fault the nation for not expressing their complaints appropriately.  <multilink><aht source="NetzivBemidbar20-5">Netziv</aht><aht source="NetzivBemidbar20-5">Bemidbar 20:5</aht><aht parshan="Netziv">About R.
