(א) וַיְהִי כִּשְׁמֹעַ הַמֶּלֶךְ חִזְקִיָּהוּ וַיִּקְרַע אֶת בְּגָדָיו וַיִּתְכַּס בַּשָּׂק וַיָּבֹא בֵּית י״י. (ב) וַיִּשְׁלַח אֶת אֶלְיָקִים אֲשֶׁר עַל הַבַּיִת וְשֶׁבְנָא הַסֹּפֵר וְאֵת זִקְנֵי הַכֹּהֲנִים מִתְכַּסִּים בַּשַּׂקִּים אֶל יְשַׁעְיָהוּ הַנָּבִיא בֶּן אָמוֹץ. (ג) וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו כֹּה אָמַר חִזְקִיָּהוּ יוֹם צָרָה וְתוֹכֵחָה וּנְאָצָה הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה כִּי בָאוּ בָנִים עַד מַשְׁבֵּר וְכֹחַ אַיִן לְלֵדָה. (ד) אוּלַי יִשְׁמַע י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֵת כׇּל דִּבְרֵי רַבְשָׁקֵה אֲשֶׁר שְׁלָחוֹ מֶלֶךְ אַשּׁוּר אֲדֹנָיו לְחָרֵף אֱלֹהִים חַי וְהוֹכִיחַ בַּדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר שָׁמַע י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ וְנָשָׂאתָ תְפִלָּה בְּעַד הַשְּׁאֵרִית הַנִּמְצָאָה. (ה) וַיָּבֹאוּ עַבְדֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ חִזְקִיָּהוּ אֶל יְשַׁעְיָהוּ. (ו) וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם יְשַׁעְיָהוּ כֹּה תֹאמְרוּן אֶל אֲדֹנֵיכֶם כֹּה אָמַר י״י אַל תִּירָא מִפְּנֵי הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר שָׁמַעְתָּ אֲשֶׁר גִּדְּפוּ נַעֲרֵי מֶלֶךְ אַשּׁוּר אֹתִי. (ז) הִנְנִי נֹתֵן בּוֹ רוּחַ וְשָׁמַע שְׁמוּעָה וְשָׁב לְאַרְצוֹ וְהִפַּלְתִּיו בַּחֶרֶב בְּאַרְצוֹ. (ח) וַיָּשׇׁב רַבְשָׁקֵה וַיִּמְצָא אֶת מֶלֶךְ אַשּׁוּר נִלְחָם עַל לִבְנָה כִּי שָׁמַע כִּי נָסַע מִלָּכִישׁ. (ט) וַיִּשְׁמַע אֶל תִּרְהָקָה מֶלֶךְ כּוּשׁ לֵאמֹר הִנֵּה יָצָא לְהִלָּחֵם אִתָּךְ וַיָּשׇׁב וַיִּשְׁלַח מַלְאָכִים אֶל חִזְקִיָּהוּ לֵאמֹר. (י) כֹּה תֹאמְרוּן אֶל חִזְקִיָּהוּ מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה לֵאמֹר אַל יַשִּׁאֲךָ אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה בֹּטֵחַ בּוֹ לֵאמֹר לֹא תִנָּתֵן יְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִם בְּיַד מֶלֶךְ אַשּׁוּר. (יא) הִנֵּה אַתָּה שָׁמַעְתָּ אֵת אֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ מַלְכֵי אַשּׁוּר לְכׇל הָאֲרָצוֹת לְהַחֲרִימָם וְאַתָּה תִּנָּצֵל. (יב) הַהִצִּילוּ אֹתָם אֱלֹהֵי הַגּוֹיִם אֲשֶׁר שִׁחֲתוּ אֲבוֹתַי אֶת גּוֹזָן וְאֶת חָרָן וְרֶצֶף וּבְנֵי עֶדֶן אֲשֶׁר בִּתְלַאשָּׂר. (יג) אַיּוֹ מֶלֶךְ חֲמָת וּמֶלֶךְ אַרְפָּד וּמֶלֶךְ לָעִיר סְפַרְוָיִם הֵנַע וְעִוָּה. (יד) וַיִּקַּח חִזְקִיָּהוּ אֶת הַסְּפָרִים מִיַּד הַמַּלְאָכִים וַיִּקְרָאֵם וַיַּעַל בֵּית י״י וַיִּפְרְשֵׂהוּ חִזְקִיָּהוּ לִפְנֵי י״י. (טו) וַיִּתְפַּלֵּל חִזְקִיָּהוּ לִפְנֵי י״י וַיֹּאמַר י״י אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל יֹשֵׁב הַכְּרֻבִים אַתָּה הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים לְבַדְּךָ לְכֹל מַמְלְכוֹת הָאָרֶץ אַתָּה עָשִׂיתָ אֶת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת הָאָרֶץ. (טז) הַטֵּה י״י אׇזְנְךָ וּשְׁמָע פְּקַח י״י עֵינֶיךָ וּרְאֵה וּשְׁמַע אֵת דִּבְרֵי סַנְחֵרִיב אֲשֶׁר שְׁלָחוֹ לְחָרֵף אֱלֹהִים חָי. (יז) אׇמְנָם י״י הֶחֱרִיבוּ מַלְכֵי אַשּׁוּר אֶת הַגּוֹיִם וְאֶת אַרְצָם. (יח) וְנָתְנוּ אֶת אֱלֹהֵיהֶם בָּאֵשׁ כִּי לֹא אֱלֹהִים הֵמָּה כִּי אִם מַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵי אָדָם עֵץ וָאֶבֶן וַיְאַבְּדוּם. (יט) וְעַתָּה י״י אֱלֹהֵינוּ הוֹשִׁיעֵנוּ נָא מִיָּדוֹ וְיֵדְעוּ כׇּל מַמְלְכוֹת הָאָרֶץ כִּי אַתָּה י״י אֱלֹהִים לְבַדֶּךָ. (כ) וַיִּשְׁלַח יְשַׁעְיָהוּ בֶן אָמוֹץ אֶל חִזְקִיָּהוּ לֵאמֹר כֹּה אָמַר י״י אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר הִתְפַּלַּלְתָּ אֵלַי אֶל סַנְחֵרִב מֶלֶךְ אַשּׁוּר שָׁמָעְתִּי. (כא) זֶה הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר י״י עָלָיו בָּזָה לְךָ לָעֲגָה לְךָ בְּתוּלַת בַּת צִיּוֹן אַחֲרֶיךָ רֹאשׁ הֵנִיעָה בַּת יְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִם. (כב) אֶת מִי חֵרַפְתָּ וְגִדַּפְתָּ וְעַל מִי הֲרִימוֹתָ קּוֹל וַתִּשָּׂא מָרוֹם עֵינֶיךָ עַל קְדוֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל. (כג) בְּיַד מַלְאָכֶיךָ חֵרַפְתָּ אֲדֹנָי וַתֹּאמֶר [בְּרֹב] (ברכב) רִכְבִּי אֲנִי עָלִיתִי מְרוֹם הָרִים יַרְכְּתֵי לְבָנוֹן וְאֶכְרֹת קוֹמַת אֲרָזָיו מִבְחוֹר בְּרֹשָׁיו וְאָבוֹאָה מְלוֹן קִצֹּה יַעַר כַּרְמִלּוֹ. (כד) אֲנִי קַרְתִּי וְשָׁתִיתִי מַיִם זָרִים וְאַחְרִב בְּכַף פְּעָמַי כֹּל יְאֹרֵי מָצוֹר. (כה) הֲלֹא שָׁמַעְתָּ לְמֵרָחוֹק אֹתָהּ עָשִׂיתִי לְמִימֵי קֶדֶם וִיצַרְתִּיהָ עַתָּה הֲבֵיאתִיהָ וּתְהִי לַהְשׁוֹת גַּלִּים נִצִּים עָרִים בְּצֻרוֹת. (כו) וְיֹשְׁבֵיהֶן קִצְרֵי יָד חַתּוּ וַיֵּבֹשׁוּ הָיוּ עֵשֶׂב שָׂדֶה וִירַק דֶּשֶׁא חֲצִיר גַּגּוֹת וּשְׁדֵפָה לִפְנֵי קָמָה. (כז) וְשִׁבְתְּךָ וְצֵאתְךָ וּבֹאֲךָ יָדָעְתִּי וְאֵת הִתְרַגֶּזְךָ אֵלָי. (כח) יַעַן הִתְרַגֶּזְךָ אֵלַי וְשַׁאֲנַנְךָ עָלָה בְאׇזְנָי וְשַׂמְתִּי חַחִי בְּאַפֶּךָ וּמִתְגִּי בִּשְׂפָתֶיךָ וַהֲשִׁבֹתִיךָ בַּדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר בָּאתָ בָּהּ. (כט) וְזֶה לְּךָ הָאוֹת אָכוֹל הַשָּׁנָה סָפִיחַ וּבַשָּׁנָה הַשֵּׁנִית סָחִישׁ וּבַשָּׁנָה הַשְּׁלִישִׁית זִרְעוּ וְקִצְרוּ וְנִטְעוּ כְרָמִים וְאִכְלוּ פִרְיָם. (ל) וְיָסְפָה פְּלֵיטַת בֵּית יְהוּדָה הַנִּשְׁאָרָה שֹׁרֶשׁ לְמָטָּה וְעָשָׂה פְרִי לְמָעְלָה. (לא) כִּי מִירוּשָׁלַ͏ִם תֵּצֵא שְׁאֵרִית וּפְלֵיטָה מֵהַר צִיּוֹן קִנְאַת י״י [צְבָאוֹת] תַּעֲשֶׂה זֹּאת. (לב) לָכֵן כֹּה אָמַר י״י אֶל מֶלֶךְ אַשּׁוּר לֹא יָבֹא אֶל הָעִיר הַזֹּאת וְלֹא יוֹרֶה שָׁם חֵץ וְלֹא יְקַדְּמֶנָּה מָגֵן וְלֹא יִשְׁפֹּךְ עָלֶיהָ סֹלְלָה. (לג) בַּדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר יָבֹא בָּהּ יָשׁוּב וְאֶל הָעִיר הַזֹּאת לֹא יָבֹא נְאֻם י״י. (לד) וְגַנּוֹתִי אֶל הָעִיר הַזֹּאת לְהוֹשִׁיעָהּ לְמַעֲנִי וּלְמַעַן דָּוִד עַבְדִּי. (לה) וַיְהִי בַּלַּיְלָה הַהוּא וַיֵּצֵא מַלְאַךְ י״י וַיַּךְ בְּמַחֲנֵה אַשּׁוּר מֵאָה שְׁמוֹנִים וַחֲמִשָּׁה אָלֶף וַיַּשְׁכִּימוּ בַבֹּקֶר וְהִנֵּה כֻלָּם פְּגָרִים מֵתִים. (לו) וַיִּסַּע וַיֵּלֶךְ וַיָּשׇׁב סַנְחֵרִיב מֶלֶךְ אַשּׁוּר וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּנִינְוֵה. (לז) וַיְהִי הוּא מִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה בֵּית נִסְרֹךְ אֱלֹהָיו וְאַדְרַמֶּלֶךְ וְשַׂרְאֶצֶר [בָּנָיו] הִכֻּהוּ בַחֶרֶב וְהֵמָּה נִמְלְטוּ אֶרֶץ אֲרָרָט וַיִּמְלֹךְ אֵסַר חַדֹּן בְּנוֹ תַּחְתָּיו.

(1) And it came to pass, when King Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of Hashem. (2) And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. (3) And they said to him, "Thus says Hezekiah, 'This day is a day of trouble, of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to birth, and there is no strength to deliver. (4) Perhaps Hashem your God will hear all the words of Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to taunt the living God, and will rebuke the words which Hashem your God has heard; therefore offer prayer for the remnant that is left." (5) So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah. (6) And Isaiah said to them, "Thus shall you say to your master, 'Thus says Hashem, 'Do not be afraid of the words that you have heard, through which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me. (7) Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear a rumour, and he shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.'" (8) So Rab-shakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish. (9) And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, "Behold, he has come out to fight against you"; he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying, (10) "Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, 'Let not your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, 'Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.' (11) Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, destroying them utterly; and shall you be delivered? (12) Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden that were in Telassar? (13) Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?" (14) And Hezekiah received the letters from the hand of the messengers, and read them; and Hezekiah went up to the house of Hashem, and spread it before Hashem. (15) And Hezekiah prayed before Hashem, and said, "O Lord, the God of Israel, that sits upon the cherubim, You are the God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; You have made heaven and earth. (16) Incline Your ear, Hashem, and hear; open Your eyes, Hashem, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, with which he has sent him to taunt the living God. (17) Indeed, Hashem, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, (18) and they have cast their gods into the fire; for they are not gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them. (19) Now therefore, Hashem, our God, save us, I beseech You, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are Hashem God, You only." (20) Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, "Thus says Hashem, the God of Israel, 'What you have prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard you.' (21) This is the word that Hashem has spoken concerning him, "The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and scorned you; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you. (22) Whom have you taunted and blasphemed? And against whom have you raised your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel! (23) By the messengers you have taunted Hashem and have said, 'With the multitude of my chariots, I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon. I have cut down its tall cedars and its choice cypresses; and I have entered into his farthest lodge, the forest of his fruitful field. (24) I have dug and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of Egypt.' (25) Have you not heard? Long ago I made it; in ancient times I fashioned it. Now I have brought it to pass, it is done; that fortified cities should be laid waste into ruinous heaps. (26) Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it has grown. (27) But I know your sitting down, and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging against Me. (28) Because of your raging against Me, and because your arrognace has come into My ears, therefore I will put My hook in your nose, and My bridle in your lips, and I will return you by the way which you came. (29) And this shall be the sign to you: you shall eat this year that which grows by itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. (30) And the remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward. (31) For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of Mount Zion they that shall escape; the zeal of Hashem of hosts shall perform this. (32) Therefore, thus says Hashem concerning the king of Assyria, 'He shall not come to this city or shoot an arrow there; he shall not come before it with shield, or cast a mound against it. (33) By the way that he came, so he shall return, and he shall not come to this city, says Hashem. (34) For I will defend this city to save it, for My own sake, and for My servant David's sake." (35) And it came to pass that night, that the angel of Hashem went forth and smote in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred eighty-five thousand; and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. (36) So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went; and returned and dwelled in Nineveh. (37) And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sarezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.
