(א) וַיַּגֵּד אַחְאָב לְאִיזֶבֶל אֵת כׇּל אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה אֵלִיָּהוּ וְאֵת כׇּל אֲשֶׁר הָרַג אֶת כׇּל הַנְּבִיאִים בֶּחָרֶב. (ב) וַתִּשְׁלַח אִיזֶבֶל מַלְאָךְ אֶל אֵלִיָּהוּ לֵאמֹר כֹּה יַעֲשׂוּן אֱלֹהִים וְכֹה יוֹסִפוּן כִּי כָעֵת מָחָר אָשִׂים אֶת נַפְשְׁךָ כְּנֶפֶשׁ אַחַד מֵהֶם. (ג) וַיַּרְא וַיָּקׇם וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל נַפְשׁוֹ וַיָּבֹא בְּאֵר שֶׁבַע אֲשֶׁר לִיהוּדָה וַיַּנַּח אֶת נַעֲרוֹ שָׁם. (ד) וְהוּא הָלַךְ בַּמִּדְבָּר דֶּרֶךְ יוֹם וַיָּבֹא וַיֵּשֶׁב תַּחַת רֹתֶם [אֶחָד] (אחת) וַיִּשְׁאַל אֶת נַפְשׁוֹ לָמוּת וַיֹּאמֶר רַב עַתָּה י״י קַח נַפְשִׁי כִּי לֹא טוֹב אָנֹכִי מֵאֲבֹתָי. (ה) וַיִּשְׁכַּב וַיִּישַׁן תַּחַת רֹתֶם אֶחָד וְהִנֵּה זֶה מַלְאָךְ נֹגֵעַ בּוֹ וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ קוּם אֱכוֹל. (ו) וַיַּבֵּט וְהִנֵּה מְרַאֲשֹׁתָיו עֻגַת רְצָפִים וְצַפַּחַת מָיִם וַיֹּאכַל וַיֵּשְׁתְּ וַיָּשׇׁב וַיִּשְׁכָּב. (ז) וַיָּשׇׁב מַלְאַךְ י״י שֵׁנִית וַיִּגַּע בּוֹ וַיֹּאמֶר קוּם אֱכֹל כִּי רַב מִמְּךָ הַדָּרֶךְ. (ח) וַיָּקׇם וַיֹּאכַל וַיִּשְׁתֶּה וַיֵּלֶךְ בְּכֹחַ הָאֲכִילָה הַהִיא אַרְבָּעִים יוֹם וְאַרְבָּעִים לַיְלָה עַד הַר הָאֱלֹהִים חֹרֵב. (ט) וַיָּבֹא שָׁם אֶל הַמְּעָרָה וַיָּלֶן שָׁם וְהִנֵּה דְבַר י״י אֵלָיו וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ מַה לְּךָ פֹה אֵלִיָּהוּ. (י) וַיֹּאמֶר קַנֹּא קִנֵּאתִי לַי״י אֱלֹהֵי צְבָאוֹת כִּי עָזְבוּ בְרִיתְךָ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת מִזְבְּחֹתֶיךָ הָרָסוּ וְאֶת נְבִיאֶיךָ הָרְגוּ בֶחָרֶב וָאִוָּתֵר אֲנִי לְבַדִּי וַיְבַקְשׁוּ אֶת נַפְשִׁי לְקַחְתָּהּ. (יא) וַיֹּאמֶר צֵא וְעָמַדְתָּ בָהָר לִפְנֵי י״י וְהִנֵּה י״י עֹבֵר וְרוּחַ גְּדוֹלָה וְחָזָק מְפָרֵק הָרִים וּמְשַׁבֵּר סְלָעִים לִפְנֵי י״י לֹא בָרוּחַ י״י וְאַחַר הָרוּחַ רַעַשׁ לֹא בָרַעַשׁ י״י. (יב) וְאַחַר הָרַעַשׁ אֵשׁ לֹא בָאֵשׁ י״י וְאַחַר הָאֵשׁ קוֹל דְּמָמָה דַקָּה. (יג) וַיְהִי כִּשְׁמֹעַ אֵלִיָּהוּ וַיָּלֶט פָּנָיו בְּאַדַּרְתּוֹ וַיֵּצֵא וַיַּעֲמֹד פֶּתַח הַמְּעָרָה וְהִנֵּה אֵלָיו קוֹל וַיֹּאמֶר מַה לְּךָ פֹה אֵלִיָּהוּ. (יד) וַיֹּאמֶר קַנֹּא קִנֵּאתִי לַי״י אֱלֹהֵי צְבָאוֹת כִּי עָזְבוּ בְרִיתְךָ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת מִזְבְּחֹתֶיךָ הָרָסוּ וְאֶת נְבִיאֶיךָ הָרְגוּ בֶחָרֶב וָאִוָּתֵר אֲנִי לְבַדִּי וַיְבַקְשׁוּ אֶת נַפְשִׁי לְקַחְתָּהּ. (טו) וַיֹּאמֶר י״י אֵלָיו לֵךְ שׁוּב לְדַרְכְּךָ מִדְבַּרָה דַמָּשֶׂק וּבָאתָ וּמָשַׁחְתָּ אֶת חֲזָאֵל לְמֶלֶךְ עַל אֲרָם. (טז) וְאֵת יֵהוּא בֶן נִמְשִׁי תִּמְשַׁח לְמֶלֶךְ עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאֶת אֱלִישָׁע בֶּן שָׁפָט מֵאָבֵל מְחוֹלָה תִּמְשַׁח לְנָבִיא תַּחְתֶּיךָ. (יז) וְהָיָה הַנִּמְלָט מֵחֶרֶב חֲזָאֵל יָמִית יֵהוּא וְהַנִּמְלָט מֵחֶרֶב יֵהוּא יָמִית אֱלִישָׁע. (יח) וְהִשְׁאַרְתִּי בְיִשְׂרָאֵל שִׁבְעַת אֲלָפִים כׇּל הַבִּרְכַּיִם אֲשֶׁר לֹא כָרְעוּ לַבַּעַל וְכׇל הַפֶּה אֲשֶׁר לֹא נָשַׁק לוֹ. (יט) וַיֵּלֶךְ מִשָּׁם וַיִּמְצָא אֶת אֱלִישָׁע בֶּן שָׁפָט וְהוּא חֹרֵשׁ שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר צְמָדִים לְפָנָיו וְהוּא בִּשְׁנֵים הֶעָשָׂר וַיַּעֲבֹר אֵלִיָּהוּ אֵלָיו וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ אַדַּרְתּוֹ אֵלָיו. (כ) וַיַּעֲזֹב אֶת הַבָּקָר וַיָּרׇץ אַחֲרֵי אֵלִיָּהוּ וַיֹּאמֶר אֶשְּׁקָה נָּא לְאָבִי וּלְאִמִּי וְאֵלְכָה אַחֲרֶיךָ וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ לֵךְ שׁוּב כִּי מֶה עָשִׂיתִי לָךְ. (כא) וַיָּשׇׁב מֵאַחֲרָיו וַיִּקַּח אֶת צֶמֶד הַבָּקָר וַיִּזְבָּחֵהוּ וּבִכְלִי הַבָּקָר בִּשְּׁלָם הַבָּשָׂר וַיִּתֵּן לָעָם וַיֹּאכֵלוּ וַיָּקׇם וַיֵּלֶךְ אַחֲרֵי אֵלִיָּהוּ וַיְשָׁרְתֵהוּ.

(1) And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and all how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. (2) Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do, and more also, if by tomorrow at this time I do not make your life as the life of one of them." (3) And when he saw that, he arose and went for his life, and he came to Beer-sheba which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. (4) But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom-tree; and he requested for himself that he might die. He said, "It is enough. Now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am not better than my fathers." (5) And he lay down and slept under a broom-tree; and, behold, an angel touched him and said to him, "Arise and eat." (6) And he looked, and, behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the hot stones and a cruse of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again. (7) And the angel of Hashem came again a second time, and he touched him and said, "Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you." (8) And he arose, and ate and drank, and he went with the strength of that meal forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God. (9) And he came there to a cave and lodged there; and, behold, the word of Hashem came to him, and He said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" (10) And he said, "I have been very jealous for Hashem, the God of hosts, for the Children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, thrown down Your altars, and slain Your prophets with the sword; and I alone have remained; and they seek my life, to take it away." (11) And He said, "Go forth, and stand upon the mountain before Hashem." And, behold, Hashem passed by, and a great and strong wind tearing mountains and breaking rocks before Hashem; but Hashem was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake; but Hashem was not in the earthquake; (12) and after the earthquake a fire; but Hashem was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. (13) And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and he went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And, behold, a voice came to him, and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" (14) And he said, "I have been very jealous for Hashem, the God of hosts; for the Children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, thrown down Your altars, and slain Your prophets with the sword; and I alone have remained; and they seek my life, to take it away." (15) And Hashem said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; and when you come, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Aram. (16) And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your stead. (17) And it shall come to pass, that he that escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall slay; and he that escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall slay. (18) But I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him." (19) So he departed from there, and he found Elisha the son of Shaphat, and he was plowing. There were twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth; and Elijah passed over to him, and cast his mantle upon him. (20) And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and he said, "Let me, please, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you." And he said to him, "Go back; for what have I done to you?" (21) And he turned back from him, and he took the pair of oxen and slaughtered them, and he boiled their flesh with the equipment of the oxen and gave to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and served him.
