Mishpat HaMelekh - Real or Warning?
Introduction
Verses in Shemuel
In Shemuel I 8 the Children of Israel ask for a king. Shemuel and Hashem say it is a bad idea. Even so Hashem tells Shemuel to listen to the nation but to tell them the Mishpat HaMelakh. Shemuel tells the nation:
Is this Mishpat HaMelekh really true? Can a king command on the nation all of these decrees?
Verses in Devarim and Yechezkel
In addition we have verses that contradict in Devarim and Yechezkel. In Devarim 17 we hear a number of restrictions on the king. The king is not allowed to higher himself from the rest of the nation. In Yechezkel we also hear that the נָּשִׂיא is not allowed to take from the rest of the nations land for him. What is the relationship between the verses in Shemuel, and Devarim and Yechezkel?
