פרק ח

(א) וַיְדַבֵּר י״י אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר. (ב) דַּבֵּר אֶל אַהֲרֹן וְאָמַרְתָּ אֵלָיו בְּהַעֲלֹתְךָ אֶת הַנֵּרֹת אֶל מוּל פְּנֵי הַמְּנוֹרָה יָאִירוּ שִׁבְעַת הַנֵּרוֹת. (ג) וַיַּעַשׂ כֵּן אַהֲרֹן אֶל מוּל פְּנֵי הַמְּנוֹרָה הֶעֱלָה נֵרֹתֶיהָ כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה י״י אֶת מֹשֶׁה. (ד) וְזֶה מַעֲשֵׂה הַמְּנֹרָה מִקְשָׁה זָהָב עַד יְרֵכָהּ עַד פִּרְחָהּ מִקְשָׁה הִוא כַּמַּרְאֶה אֲשֶׁר הֶרְאָה י״י אֶת מֹשֶׁה כֵּן עָשָׂה אֶת הַמְּנֹרָה. (ה) וַיְדַבֵּר י״י אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר. (ו) קַח אֶת הַלְוִיִּם מִתּוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְטִהַרְתָּ אֹתָם. (ז) וְכֹה תַעֲשֶׂה לָהֶם לְטַהֲרָם הַזֵּה עֲלֵיהֶם מֵי חַטָּאת וְהֶעֱבִירוּ תַעַר עַל כׇּל בְּשָׂרָם וְכִבְּסוּ בִגְדֵיהֶם וְהִטֶּהָרוּ. (ח) וְלָקְחוּ פַּר בֶּן בָּקָר וּמִנְחָתוֹ סֹלֶת בְּלוּלָה בַשָּׁמֶן וּפַר שֵׁנִי בֶן בָּקָר תִּקַּח לְחַטָּאת. (ט) וְהִקְרַבְתָּ אֶת הַלְוִיִּם לִפְנֵי אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד וְהִקְהַלְתָּ אֶת כׇּל עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. (י) וְהִקְרַבְתָּ אֶת הַלְוִיִּם לִפְנֵי י״י וְסָמְכוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת יְדֵיהֶם עַל הַלְוִיִּם. (יא) וְהֵנִיף אַהֲרֹן אֶת הַלְוִיִּם תְּנוּפָה לִפְנֵי י״י מֵאֵת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהָיוּ לַעֲבֹד אֶת עֲבֹדַת י״י. (יב) וְהַלְוִיִּם יִסְמְכוּ אֶת יְדֵיהֶם עַל רֹאשׁ הַפָּרִים וַעֲשֵׂה אֶת הָאֶחָד חַטָּאת וְאֶת הָאֶחָד עֹלָה לַי״י לְכַפֵּר עַל הַלְוִיִּם. (יג) וְהַעֲמַדְתָּ אֶת הַלְוִיִּם לִפְנֵי אַהֲרֹן וְלִפְנֵי בָנָיו וְהֵנַפְתָּ אֹתָם תְּנוּפָה לַי״י. (יד) וְהִבְדַּלְתָּ אֶת הַלְוִיִּם מִתּוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהָיוּ לִי הַלְוִיִּם. (טו) וְאַחֲרֵי כֵן יָבֹאוּ הַלְוִיִּם לַעֲבֹד אֶת אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד וְטִהַרְתָּ אֹתָם וְהֵנַפְתָּ אֹתָם תְּנוּפָה. (טז) כִּי נְתֻנִים נְתֻנִים הֵמָּה לִי מִתּוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל תַּחַת פִּטְרַת כׇּל רֶחֶם בְּכוֹר כֹּל מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לָקַחְתִּי אֹתָם לִי. (יז) כִּי לִי כׇל בְּכוֹר בִּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בָּאָדָם וּבַבְּהֵמָה בְּיוֹם הַכֹּתִי כׇל בְּכוֹר בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם הִקְדַּשְׁתִּי אֹתָם לִי. (יח) וָאֶקַּח אֶת הַלְוִיִּם תַּחַת כׇּל בְּכוֹר בִּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. (יט) וָאֶתְּנָה אֶת הַלְוִיִּם נְתֻנִים לְאַהֲרֹן וּלְבָנָיו מִתּוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לַעֲבֹד אֶת עֲבֹדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד וּלְכַפֵּר עַל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְלֹא יִהְיֶה בִּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל נֶגֶף בְּגֶשֶׁת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל הַקֹּדֶשׁ. (כ) וַיַּעַשׂ מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן וְכׇל עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לַלְוִיִּם כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה י״י אֶת מֹשֶׁה לַלְוִיִּם כֵּן עָשׂוּ לָהֶם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. (כא) וַיִּתְחַטְּאוּ הַלְוִיִּם וַיְכַבְּסוּ בִּגְדֵיהֶם וַיָּנֶף אַהֲרֹן אֹתָם תְּנוּפָה לִפְנֵי י״י וַיְכַפֵּר עֲלֵיהֶם אַהֲרֹן לְטַהֲרָם. (כב) וְאַחֲרֵי כֵן בָּאוּ הַלְוִיִּם לַעֲבֹד אֶת עֲבֹדָתָם בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד לִפְנֵי אַהֲרֹן וְלִפְנֵי בָנָיו כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה י״י אֶת מֹשֶׁה עַל הַלְוִיִּם כֵּן עָשׂוּ לָהֶם. (כג) וַיְדַבֵּר י״י אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר. (כד) זֹאת אֲשֶׁר לַלְוִיִּם מִבֶּן חָמֵשׁ וְעֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה יָבוֹא לִצְבֹא צָבָא בַּעֲבֹדַת אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד. (כה) וּמִבֶּן חֲמִשִּׁים שָׁנָה יָשׁוּב מִצְּבָא הָעֲבֹדָה וְלֹא יַעֲבֹד עוֹד. (כו) וְשֵׁרֵת אֶת אֶחָיו בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד לִשְׁמֹר מִשְׁמֶרֶת וַעֲבֹדָה לֹא יַעֲבֹד כָּכָה תַּעֲשֶׂה לַלְוִיִּם בְּמִשְׁמְרֹתָם.

פרק ט

(א) וַיְדַבֵּר י״י אֶל מֹשֶׁה בְמִדְבַּר סִינַי בַּשָּׁנָה הַשֵּׁנִית לְצֵאתָם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם בַּחֹדֶשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹן לֵאמֹר. (ב) וְיַעֲשׂוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת הַפָּסַח בְּמוֹעֲדוֹ. (ג) בְּאַרְבָּעָה עָשָׂר יוֹם בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַזֶּה בֵּין הָעַרְבַּיִם תַּעֲשׂוּ אֹתוֹ בְּמֹעֲדוֹ כְּכׇל חֻקֹּתָיו וּכְכׇל מִשְׁפָּטָיו תַּעֲשׂוּ אֹתוֹ. (ד) וַיְדַבֵּר מֹשֶׁה אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לַעֲשֹׂת הַפָּסַח. (ה) וַיַּעֲשׂוּ אֶת הַפֶּסַח בָּרִאשׁוֹן בְּאַרְבָּעָה עָשָׂר יוֹם לַחֹדֶשׁ בֵּין הָעַרְבַּיִם בְּמִדְבַּר סִינָי כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה י״י אֶת מֹשֶׁה כֵּן עָשׂוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. (ו) וַיְהִי אֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר הָיוּ טְמֵאִים לְנֶפֶשׁ אָדָם וְלֹא יָכְלוּ לַעֲשֹׂת הַפֶּסַח בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא וַיִּקְרְבוּ לִפְנֵי מֹשֶׁה וְלִפְנֵי אַהֲרֹן בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא. (ז) וַיֹּאמְרוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים הָהֵמָּה אֵלָיו אֲנַחְנוּ טְמֵאִים לְנֶפֶשׁ אָדָם לָמָּה נִגָּרַע לְבִלְתִּי הַקְרִיב אֶת קׇרְבַּן י״י בְּמֹעֲדוֹ בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. (ח) וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם מֹשֶׁה עִמְדוּ וְאֶשְׁמְעָה מַה יְצַוֶּה י״י לָכֶם. (ט) וַיְדַבֵּר י״י אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר. (י) דַּבֵּר אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר אִישׁ אִישׁ כִּי יִהְיֶה טָמֵא לָנֶפֶשׁ אוֹ בְדֶרֶךְ רְחֹקָהלפי המסורה יש נקודה מעל האות ה'. לָכֶם אוֹ לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶם וְעָשָׂה פֶסַח לַי״י. (יא) בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי בְּאַרְבָּעָה עָשָׂר יוֹם בֵּין הָעַרְבַּיִם יַעֲשׂוּ אֹתוֹ עַל מַצּוֹת וּמְרֹרִים יֹאכְלֻהוּ. (יב) לֹא יַשְׁאִירוּ מִמֶּנּוּ עַד בֹּקֶר וְעֶצֶם לֹא יִשְׁבְּרוּ בוֹ כְּכׇל חֻקַּת הַפֶּסַח יַעֲשׂוּ אֹתוֹ. (יג) וְהָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר הוּא טָהוֹר וּבְדֶרֶךְ לֹא הָיָה וְחָדַל לַעֲשׂוֹת הַפֶּסַח וְנִכְרְתָה הַנֶּפֶשׁ הַהִוא מֵעַמֶּיהָ כִּי קׇרְבַּן י״י לֹא הִקְרִיב בְּמֹעֲדוֹ חֶטְאוֹ יִשָּׂא הָאִישׁ הַהוּא. (יד) וְכִי יָגוּר אִתְּכֶם גֵּר וְעָשָׂה פֶסַח לַי״י כְּחֻקַּת הַפֶּסַח וּכְמִשְׁפָּטוֹ כֵּן יַעֲשֶׂה חֻקָּה אַחַת יִהְיֶה לָכֶם וְלַגֵּר וּלְאֶזְרַח הָאָרֶץ. (טו) וּבְיוֹם הָקִים אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן כִּסָּה הֶעָנָן אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן לְאֹהֶל הָעֵדֻת וּבָעֶרֶב יִהְיֶה עַל הַמִּשְׁכָּן כְּמַרְאֵה אֵשׁ עַד בֹּקֶר. (טז) כֵּן יִהְיֶה תָמִיד הֶעָנָן יְכַסֶּנּוּ וּמַרְאֵה אֵשׁ לָיְלָה. (יז) וּלְפִי הֵעָלוֹת הֶעָנָן מֵעַל הָאֹהֶל וְאַחֲרֵי כֵן יִסְעוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וּבִמְקוֹם אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁכׇּן שָׁם הֶעָנָן שָׁם יַחֲנוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. (יח) עַל פִּי י״י יִסְעוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְעַל פִּי י״י יַחֲנוּ כׇּל יְמֵי אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁכֹּן הֶעָנָן עַל הַמִּשְׁכָּן יַחֲנוּ. (יט) וּבְהַאֲרִיךְ הֶעָנָן עַל הַמִּשְׁכָּן יָמִים רַבִּים וְשָׁמְרוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת מִשְׁמֶרֶת י״י וְלֹא יִסָּעוּ. (כ) וְיֵשׁ אֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה הֶעָנָן יָמִים מִסְפָּר עַל הַמִּשְׁכָּן עַל פִּי י״י יַחֲנוּ וְעַל פִּי י״י יִסָּעוּ. (כא) וְיֵשׁ אֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה הֶעָנָן מֵעֶרֶב עַד בֹּקֶר וְנַעֲלָה הֶעָנָן בַּבֹּקֶר וְנָסָעוּ אוֹ יוֹמָם וָלַיְלָה וְנַעֲלָה הֶעָנָן וְנָסָעוּ. (כב) אוֹ יֹמַיִם אוֹ חֹדֶשׁ אוֹ יָמִים בְּהַאֲרִיךְ הֶעָנָן עַל הַמִּשְׁכָּן לִשְׁכֹּן עָלָיו יַחֲנוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְלֹא יִסָּעוּ וּבְהֵעָלֹתוֹ יִסָּעוּ. (כג) עַל פִּי י״י יַחֲנוּ וְעַל פִּי י״י יִסָּעוּ אֶת מִשְׁמֶרֶת י״י שָׁמָרוּ עַל פִּי י״י בְּיַד מֹשֶׁה.

פרק י

(א) וַיְדַבֵּר י״י אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר. (ב) עֲשֵׂה לְךָ שְׁתֵּי חֲצוֹצְרֹת כֶּסֶף מִקְשָׁה תַּעֲשֶׂה אֹתָם וְהָיוּ לְךָ לְמִקְרָא הָעֵדָה וּלְמַסַּע אֶת הַמַּחֲנוֹת. (ג) וְתָקְעוּ בָּהֵן וְנוֹעֲדוּ אֵלֶיךָ כׇּל הָעֵדָה אֶל פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד. (ד) וְאִם בְּאַחַת יִתְקָעוּ וְנוֹעֲדוּ אֵלֶיךָ הַנְּשִׂיאִים רָאשֵׁי אַלְפֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. (ה) וּתְקַעְתֶּם תְּרוּעָה וְנָסְעוּ הַמַּחֲנוֹת הַחֹנִים קֵדְמָה. (ו) וּתְקַעְתֶּם תְּרוּעָה שֵׁנִית וְנָסְעוּ הַמַּחֲנוֹת הַחֹנִים תֵּימָנָה תְּרוּעָה יִתְקְעוּ לְמַסְעֵיהֶם. (ז) וּבְהַקְהִיל אֶת הַקָּהָל תִּתְקְעוּ וְלֹא תָרִיעוּ. (ח) וּבְנֵי אַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֲנִים יִתְקְעוּ בַּחֲצֹצְרוֹת וְהָיוּ לָכֶם לְחֻקַּת עוֹלָם לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶם. (ט) וְכִי תָבֹאוּ מִלְחָמָה בְּאַרְצְכֶם עַל הַצַּר הַצֹּרֵר אֶתְכֶם וַהֲרֵעֹתֶם בַּחֲצֹצְרֹת וְנִזְכַּרְתֶּם לִפְנֵי י״י אֱלֹהֵיכֶם וְנוֹשַׁעְתֶּם מֵאֹיְבֵיכֶם. (י) וּבְיוֹם שִׂמְחַתְכֶם וּבְמוֹעֲדֵיכֶם וּבְרָאשֵׁי חׇדְשֵׁיכֶםבספרי ספרד ואשכנז: חׇדְשֵׁכֶם. וּתְקַעְתֶּם בַּחֲצֹצְרֹת עַל עֹלֹתֵיכֶם וְעַל זִבְחֵי שַׁלְמֵיכֶם וְהָיוּ לָכֶם לְזִכָּרוֹן לִפְנֵי אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֲנִי י״י אֱלֹהֵיכֶם. (יא) וַיְהִי בַּשָּׁנָה הַשֵּׁנִית בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי בְּעֶשְׂרִים בַּחֹדֶשׁ נַעֲלָה הֶעָנָן מֵעַל מִשְׁכַּן הָעֵדֻת. (יב) וַיִּסְעוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמַסְעֵיהֶם מִמִּדְבַּר סִינָי וַיִּשְׁכֹּן הֶעָנָן בְּמִדְבַּר פָּארָן. (יג) וַיִּסְעוּ בָּרִאשֹׁנָה עַל פִּי י״י בְּיַד מֹשֶׁה. (יד) וַיִּסַּע דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה בְנֵי יְהוּדָה בָּרִאשֹׁנָה לְצִבְאֹתָם וְעַל צְבָאוֹ נַחְשׁוֹן בֶּן עַמִּינָדָב. (טו) וְעַל צְבָא מַטֵּה בְּנֵי יִשָּׂשכָר נְתַנְאֵל בֶּן צוּעָר. (טז) וְעַל צְבָא מַטֵּה בְּנֵי זְבוּלֻן אֱלִיאָב בֶּן חֵלֹן. (יז) וְהוּרַד הַמִּשְׁכָּן וְנָסְעוּ בְנֵי גֵרְשׁוֹן וּבְנֵי מְרָרִי נֹשְׂאֵי הַמִּשְׁכָּן. (יח) וְנָסַע דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה רְאוּבֵן לְצִבְאֹתָם וְעַל צְבָאוֹ אֱלִיצוּר בֶּן שְׁדֵיאוּר. (יט) וְעַל צְבָא מַטֵּה בְּנֵי שִׁמְעוֹן שְׁלֻמִיאֵל בֶּן צוּרִישַׁדָּי. (כ) וְעַל צְבָא מַטֵּה בְנֵי גָד אֶלְיָסָף בֶּן דְּעוּאֵל. (כא) וְנָסְעוּ הַקְּהָתִים נֹשְׂאֵי הַמִּקְדָּשׁ וְהֵקִימוּ אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן עַד בֹּאָם. (כב) וְנָסַע דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה בְנֵי אֶפְרַיִם לְצִבְאֹתָם וְעַל צְבָאוֹ אֱלִישָׁמָע בֶּן עַמִּיהוּד. (כג) וְעַל צְבָא מַטֵּה בְּנֵי מְנַשֶּׁה גַּמְלִיאֵל בֶּן פְּדָהצוּר. (כד) וְעַל צְבָא מַטֵּה בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן אֲבִידָן בֶּן גִּדְעוֹנִי. (כה) וְנָסַע דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה בְנֵי דָן מְאַסֵּף לְכׇל הַמַּחֲנֹת לְצִבְאֹתָם וְעַל צְבָאוֹ אֲחִיעֶזֶר בֶּן עַמִּישַׁדָּי. (כו) וְעַל צְבָא מַטֵּה בְּנֵי אָשֵׁר פַּגְעִיאֵל בֶּן עׇכְרָן. (כז) וְעַל צְבָא מַטֵּה בְּנֵי נַפְתָּלִי אֲחִירַע בֶּן עֵינָן. (כח) אֵלֶּה מַסְעֵי בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְצִבְאֹתָם וַיִּסָּעוּ. (כט) וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה לְחֹבָב בֶּן רְעוּאֵל הַמִּדְיָנִי חֹתֵן מֹשֶׁה נֹסְעִים אֲנַחְנוּ אֶל הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר אָמַר י״י אֹתוֹ אֶתֵּן לָכֶם לְכָה אִתָּנוּ וְהֵטַבְנוּ לָךְ כִּי י״י דִּבֶּר טוֹב עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל. (ל) וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו לֹא אֵלֵךְ כִּי אִם אֶל אַרְצִי וְאֶל מוֹלַדְתִּי אֵלֵךְ. (לא) וַיֹּאמֶר אַל נָא תַּעֲזֹב אֹתָנוּ כִּי עַל כֵּן יָדַעְתָּ חֲנֹתֵנוּ בַּמִּדְבָּר וְהָיִיתָ לָּנוּ לְעֵינָיִם. (לב) וְהָיָה כִּי תֵלֵךְ עִמָּנוּ וְהָיָה הַטּוֹב הַהוּא אֲשֶׁר יֵיטִיב י״י עִמָּנוּ וְהֵטַבְנוּ לָךְ. (לג) וַיִּסְעוּ מֵהַר י״י דֶּרֶךְ שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים וַאֲרוֹן בְּרִית י״י נֹסֵעַ לִפְנֵיהֶם דֶּרֶךְ שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים לָתוּר לָהֶם מְנוּחָה. (לד) וַעֲנַן י״י עֲלֵיהֶם יוֹמָם בְּנׇסְעָם מִן הַמַּחֲנֶה. (לה) ׆ וַיְהִי בִּנְסֹעַ הָאָרֹן וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה קוּמָה י״י וְיָפֻצוּ אֹיְבֶיךָ וְיָנֻסוּ מְשַׂנְאֶיךָ מִפָּנֶיךָ. (לו) וּבְנֻחֹה יֹאמַר שׁוּבָה י״י רִבְבוֹת אַלְפֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. ׆

פרק יא

(א) וַיְהִי הָעָם כְּמִתְאֹנְנִים רַע בְּאׇזְנֵי י״י וַיִּשְׁמַע י״י וַיִּחַר אַפּוֹ וַתִּבְעַר בָּם אֵשׁ י״י וַתֹּאכַל בִּקְצֵה הַמַּחֲנֶה. (ב) וַיִּצְעַק הָעָם אֶל מֹשֶׁה וַיִּתְפַּלֵּל מֹשֶׁה אֶל י״י וַתִּשְׁקַע הָאֵשׁ. (ג) וַיִּקְרָא שֵׁם הַמָּקוֹם הַהוּא תַּבְעֵרָה כִּי בָעֲרָה בָם אֵשׁ י״י. (ד) וְהָאסַפְסֻף אֲשֶׁר בְּקִרְבּוֹ הִתְאַוּוּ תַּאֲוָה וַיָּשֻׁבוּ וַיִּבְכּוּ גַּם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֹּאמְרוּ מִי יַאֲכִלֵנוּ בָּשָׂר. (ה) זָכַרְנוּ אֶת הַדָּגָה אֲשֶׁר נֹאכַל בְּמִצְרַיִם חִנָּם אֵת הַקִּשֻּׁאִים וְאֵת הָאֲבַטִּחִים וְאֶת הֶחָצִיר וְאֶת הַבְּצָלִים וְאֶת הַשּׁוּמִים. (ח) שָׁטוּ הָעָם וְלָקְטוּ וְטָחֲנוּ בָרֵחַיִם אוֹ דָכוּ בַּמְּדֹכָה וּבִשְּׁלוּ בַּפָּרוּר וְעָשׂוּ אֹתוֹ עֻגוֹת וְהָיָה טַעְמוֹ כְּטַעַם לְשַׁד הַשָּׁמֶן. Chapter 8

(1) Hashem spoke to Moses, saying, (2) "Speak to Aaron, and tell him, 'When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lampstand.'" (3) Aaron did so. He lit its lamps to light the area in front of the lampstand, as Hashem commanded Moses. (4) This was the workmanship of the lampstand, beaten work of gold. From its base to its flowers, it was beaten work; according to the pattern which Hashem had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand. (5) Hashem spoke to Moses, saying, (6) "Take the Levites from among the Children of Israel, and cleanse them. (7) You shall do this to them, to cleanse them: sprinkle the water of cleansing on them, let them shave their whole bodies with a razor, and let them wash their clothes, and cleanse themselves. (8) Then let them take a young bull, and its meal offering, fine flour mixed with oil; and another young bull you shall take for a sin offering. (9) You shall present the Levites before the Tent of Meeting. You shall assemble the whole congregation of the Children of Israel. (10) You shall present the Levites before Hashem. The Children of Israel shall lay their hands on the Levites, (11) and Aaron shall offer the Levites before Hashem for a wave offering, on the behalf of the Children of Israel, that it may be theirs to do the service of Hashem. (12) The Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, and you shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering to Hashem, to make atonement for the Levites. (13) You shall set the Levites before Aaron, and before his sons, and offer them as a wave offering to Hashem. (14) Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the Children of Israel, and the Levites shall be mine. (15) After that, the Levites shall go in to do the service of the Tent of Meeting; and you shall cleanse them, and offer them as a wave offering. (16) For they are wholly given to me from among the Children of Israel; instead of all who open the womb, even the firstborn of all the Children of Israel, I have taken them to me. (17) For all the firstborn among the Children of Israel are mine, both man and animal. On the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified them for myself. (18) I have taken the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the Children of Israel. (19) I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the Children of Israel, to do the service of the Children of Israel in the Tent of Meeting, and to make atonement for the Children of Israel, that there be no plague among the Children of Israel, when the Children of Israel come near to the sanctuary." (20) Moses, and Aaron, and all the congregation of the Children of Israel did so to the Levites. According to all that Hashem commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so the Children of Israel did to them. (21) The Levites purified themselves from sin, and they washed their clothes. Aaron offered them for a wave offering before Hashem; and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them. (22) After that, the Levites went in to do their service in the Tent of Meeting before Aaron, and before his sons: as Hashem had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them. (23) Hashem spoke to Moses, saying, (24) "This is that which belongs to the Levites: from twenty-five years old and upward they shall go in to perform the service in the work of the Tent of Meeting; (25) and from the age of fifty years they shall cease performing the work, and shall serve no more. (26) However, they shall minister with their brothers in the Tent of Meeting, to perform the duty, but they shall do no service. You shall do thus to the Levites concerning their duties."

Chapter 9

(1) Hashem spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, (2) "Let the Children of Israel keep the Passover in its appointed season. (3) On the fourteenth day of this month, at evening, you shall keep it in its appointed season; according to all its statutes, and according to all its ordinances, you shall keep it." (4) Moses spoke to the Children of Israel, that they should keep the Passover. (5) They kept the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening, in the wilderness of Sinai. According to all that Hashem commanded Moses, so the Children of Israel did. (6) There were certain men, who were unclean because of the dead body of a man, so that they could not keep the Passover on that day, and they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day. (7) Those men said to him, "We are unclean because of the dead body of a man. Why are we kept back, that we may not offer the offering of Hashem in its appointed season among the Children of Israel?" (8) Moses answered them, "Wait, that I may hear what Hashem will command concerning you." (9) Hashem spoke to Moses, saying, (10) "Say to the Children of Israel, 'If any man of you or of your generations is unclean by reason of a dead body, or is on a journey far away, he shall still keep the Passover to Hashem. (11) In the second month, on the fourteenth day at evening they shall keep it; they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. (12) They shall leave none of it until the morning, nor break a bone of it. According to all the statute of the Passover they shall keep it. (13) But the man who is clean, and is not on a journey, and fails to keep the Passover, that soul shall be cut off from his people. Because he didn't offer the offering of Hashem in its appointed season, that man shall bear his sin. (14) If a foreigner lives among you, and desires to keep the Passover to Hashem; according to the statute of the Passover, and according to its ordinance, so shall he do. You shall have one statute, both for the foreigner, and for him who is born in the land.'" (15) On the day that the Tabernacle was raised up, the cloud covered the Tabernacle, even the Tent of the Testimony: and at evening it was over the Tabernacle as it were the appearance of fire, until morning. (16) So it was continually. The cloud covered it, and the appearance of fire by night. (17) Whenever the cloud was taken up from over the Tent, then after that the Children of Israel traveled; and in the place where the cloud remained, there the Children of Israel encamped. (18) At the commandment of Hashem, the Children of Israel traveled, and at the commandment of Hashem they encamped. As long as the cloud remained on the Tabernacle they remained encamped. (19) When the cloud stayed on the Tabernacle many days, then the Children of Israel kept Hashem's command, and didn't travel. (20) Sometimes the cloud was a few days on the Tabernacle; then according to the commandment of Hashem they remained encamped, and according to the commandment of Hashem they traveled. (21) Sometimes the cloud was from evening until morning, and when the cloud was taken up in the morning, they traveled, or by day and by night, when the cloud was taken up, they traveled. (22) Whether it was two days, or a month, or a year that the cloud stayed on the Tabernacle, remaining on it, the Children of Israel remained encamped, and didn't travel; but when it was taken up, they traveled. (23) At the commandment of Hashem they encamped, and at the commandment of Hashem they traveled. They kept Hashem's command, at the commandment of Hashem by Moses.

Chapter 10

(1) Hashem spoke to Moses, saying, (2) "Make two trumpets of silver. You shall make them of beaten work. You shall use them for the calling of the congregation and for the journeying of the camps. (3) When they blow them, all the congregation shall gather themselves to you at the door of the Tent of Meeting. (4) If they blow just one, then the princes, the heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves to you. (5) When you blow an alarm, the camps that lie on the east side shall go forward. (6) When you blow an alarm the second time, the camps that lie on the south side shall go forward. They shall blow an alarm for their journeys. (7) But when the assembly is to be gathered together, you shall blow, but you shall not sound an alarm. (8) The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets. This shall be to you for a statute forever throughout your generations. (9) When you go to war in your land against the adversary who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets. Then you will be remembered before Hashem your God, and you will be saved from your enemies. (10) Also on the day of your gladness, and in your set feasts, and in the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be to you for a memorial before your God. I am Hashem your God." (11) It happened in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, that the cloud was taken up from over the Tabernacle of the testimony. (12) The Children of Israel went forward according to their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud stayed in the wilderness of Paran. (13) They first went forward according to the commandment of Hashem by Moses. (14) First, the standard of the camp of the children of Judah went forward according to their armies. Nahshon the son of Amminadab was over his army. (15) Nethanel the son of Zuar was over the army of the tribe of the children of Issachar. (16) Eliab the son of Helon was over the army of the tribe of the children of Zebulun. (17) The Tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who bore the Tabernacle, went forward. (18) The standard of the camp of Reuben went forward according to their armies. Elizur the son of Shedeur was over his army. (19) Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai was over the army of the tribe of the children of Simeon. (20) Eliasaph the son of Deuel was over the army of the tribe of the children of Gad. (21) The Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary. The others set up the Tabernacle before they arrived. (22) The standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies. Elishama the son of Ammihud was over his army. (23) Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur was over the army of the tribe of the children of Manasseh. (24) Abidan the son of Gideoni was over the army of the tribe of the children of Benjamin. (25) The standard of the camp of the children of Dan, which was the rear guard of all the camps, set forward according to their armies. Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai was over his army. (26) Pagiel the son of Ochran was over the army of the tribe of the children of Asher. (27) Ahira the son of Enan was over the army of the tribe of the children of Naphtali. (28) Thus were the travels of the Children of Israel according to their armies; and they went forward. (29) Moses said to Hobab, the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law, "We are journeying to the place of which Hashem said, 'I will give it to you.' Come with us, and we will treat you well; for Hashem has spoken good concerning Israel." (30) He said to him, "I will not go; but I will depart to my own land, and to my relatives." (31) He said, "Don't leave us, please; because you know how we should encamp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes. (32) It shall be, if you go with us, it shall be that whatever good Hashem does to us, we will do the same to you." (33) They set forward from the Mount of Hashem three days' journey. The ark of the covenant of Hashem went before them three days' journey to seek out a resting place for them. (34) The cloud of Hashem was over them by day, when they set forward from the camp. (35) When the ark traveled, Moshe would say, "Arise Hashem and may Your enemies disperse, and may those who hate You flee from before You." (36) And when it rested he would say, "Give tranquility,⁠give tranquility | שׁוּבָה – Cf. R"Y Bekhor Shor, "Return", suggesting that Moshe prayed for the safe return of every member of Israel, but such a prayer would make more sense upon leaving than when camping, and see Ibn Ezra that when the root "שוב" takes the meaning "return" in the pa'al conjugation, it is always intransitive, unlike here. He and Rashi thus relate the verb to the noun "שׁוּבָה" which they understand to mean calm and repose (see Yeshayahu 30:15 where it is parallel to "נַחַת", rest and quiet). Moshe requests that the people not need fear another enemy. Cf. HaRekhasim Levik'ah: "Return, Hashem, to the myriads of thousands", with Moshe praying that Hashem's presence should return to dwell among the Israelite camp (after it and the ark had dwelled elsewhere). He points to Shemuel II 17:20 and Divrei HaYamim II 28:15 for other cases where the word "to" is assumed. Finally, see Sforno who suggests "Return Hashem of the myriad of thousands", comparing this epithet to the term "Hashem of hosts". Hashem, to the myriadsmyriads | רִבְבוֹת – See Ibn Ezra that the term stems from the word "רב", many. Alternatively, it means more specifically: "ten thousand" (see Shofetim 20:10). of thousands of Israel."

Chapter 11

(1) The people were complaining in the ears of Hashem. When Hashem heard it, his anger was kindled; and Hashem's fire burnt among them, and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. (2) The people cried to Moses; and Moses prayed to Hashem, and the fire abated. (3) The name of that place was called Taberah, because Hashem's fire burnt among them. (4) The mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly; and the Children of Israel also wept again, and said, "Who will give us flesh to eat? (5) We remember the fish which we ate in Egypt for nothing, the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic; (6) but now we have lost our appetite. There is nothing at all except this manna to look at." (7) The manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like the appearance of bdellium. (8) The people went around, gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it. Its taste was like the taste of fresh oil. (9) When the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it. (10) Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent; and the anger of Hashem was kindled greatly; and Moses was displeased. (11) Moses said to Hashem, "Why have you treated your servant so badly? Why haven't I found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me? (12) Have I conceived all this people? Have I brought them forth, that you should tell me, 'Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which you swore to their fathers?' (13) Where could I get meat to give to all this people? For they weep to me, saying, 'Give us meat, that we may eat.' (14) I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. (15) If you treat me this way, please kill me right now, if I have found favor in your sight; and don't let me see my wretchedness." (16) Hashem said to Moses, "Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you. (17) I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit which is on you, and will put it on them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you not bear it yourself alone. (18) "Say to the people, 'Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow, and you will eat flesh; for you have wept in the ears of Hashem, saying, 'Who will give us flesh to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt.' Therefore Hashem will give you flesh, and you will eat. (19) You will not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days, (20) but a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it is loathsome to you; because you have rejected Hashem who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, 'Why did we come out of Egypt?'" (21) Moses said, "The people among whom I am, are six hundred thousand men on foot; and you have said, 'I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.' (22) Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to be sufficient for them? Shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to be sufficient for them?" (23) Hashem said to Moses, "Has Hashem's hand grown short? Now you will see whether my word will happen to you or not." (24) Moses went out, and told the people the words of Hashem; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them around the Tent. (25) Hashem came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was on him, and put it on the seventy elders; and it happened that when the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did so no more. (26) But two men remained in the camp. The name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad, and the Spirit rested on them. And they were of those who were written, but had not gone out to the Tent; and they prophesied in the camp. (27) A young man ran, and told Moses, and said, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!" (28) Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his chosen men, answered, "My lord Moses, restrain them!" (29) Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all Hashem's people were prophets, that Hashem would put his spirit on them!" (30) Moses went into the camp, he and the elders of Israel. (31) A wind from Hashem went out and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day's journey on this side, and a day's journey on the other side, around the camp, and about two cubits above the surface of the earth. (32) The people rose up all that day, and all the night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails. He who gathered least gathered ten heaps; and they spread them all abroad for themselves around the camp. (33) While the flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of Hashem was kindled against the people, and Hashem struck the people with a very great plague. (34) The name of that place was called Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who lusted. (35) From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth; and they stayed at Hazeroth.

Chapter 12

(1) Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married; for he had married a Cushite woman. (2) They said, "Has Hashem indeed spoken only with Moses? Hasn't he spoken also with us?" And Hashem heard. (3) Now the man Moses was very humble, above all the men who were on the surface of the earth. (4) Hashem spoke suddenly to Moses, to Aaron, and to Miriam, "You three come out to the Tent of Meeting!" The three of them came out. (5) Hashem came down in a pillar of cloud, and stood at the door of the Tent, and called Aaron and Miriam; and they both came forward. (6) He said, "Hear now my words. If there is a prophet among you, I Hashem will make myself known to him in a vision. I will speak with him in a dream. (7) My servant Moses is not so. He is faithful in all my house. (8) With him I will speak mouth to mouth, even plainly, and not in riddles; and he shall see Hashem's form. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant, against Moses?" (9) The anger of Hashem was kindled against them; and he departed. (10) The cloud departed from over the Tent; and behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow. Aaron looked at Miriam, and behold, she was leprous. (11) Aaron said to Moses, "Oh, my lord, please don't count this sin against us, in which we have done foolishly, and in which we have sinned. (12) Let her not, I pray, be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother's womb." (13) Moses cried to Hashem, saying, "Heal her, God, I beg you!" (14) Hashem said to Moses, "If her father had but spit in her face, shouldn't she be ashamed seven days? Let her be closed up outside of the camp seven days, and after that she shall be brought in again." (15) Miriam was shut up outside of the camp seven days, and the people didn't travel until Miriam was brought in again. (16) Afterward the people traveled from Hazeroth, and encamped in the wilderness of Paran.
