Parashat Ki Tavo – Summary
- Parashat Ki Tavo concludes Moshe's discourse on the commandments that form the basis of the Covenant of the Plains of Moav, which is described in the final chapters of Devarim.
- First Fruits Rite and Tithing Declaration – Chapter 26 describes the ceremony of the bringing of the first fruits (bikkurim) to the Temple. This chapter concludes Moshe's discourse on the commandments.
- Covenant at Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Eival – In Chapter 27, Moshe instructs the Children of Israel to perform a covenantal ceremony in the Land of Israel, involving several components: the writing of the Torah on stones, the erection of an altar and offering of sacrifices, and the proclamation of blessings on Mt. Gerizim and curses on Mt. Eival. The chapter concludes with the list of curses to be recited in this ceremony.
- Reward and Punishment – Chapter 28 presents a list of rewards for observing the commandments, including health, agricultural prosperity, and military victory. This is followed by a parallel but much lengthier list of punishments for disobedience which culminates in exile.
- The Covenant – In Chapter 29, Moshe reminds the Children of Israel of all the miracles Hashem has done for them since the Exodus, and urges them to fulfill their covenant with God so that they may succeed in all their endeavors.
