Parashat Mishpatim – Summary

  • The legal code presented in Parashat Mishpatim fleshes out many of the principles that were only briefly outlined in the Decalogue.
  • Civil and Criminal LawChapters 21–22 present the basics of the Torah's civil and criminal law codes.
  • Chapter 23 discusses various commandments related to the judicial system, helping others, and the festival cycle. The chapter concludes with a Divine promise to assist the Children of Israel in conquering the land of Israel and a warning that they should not adopt the practices of the land's Canaanite inhabitants.
  • Covenant and Tablets – In Chapter 24, the Torah returns to the Sinai narrative, describing the covenant between Hashem and the Children of Israel. The chapter concludes with Moshe's ascent to Mt. Sinai to receive the Tablets of the Law which will be the symbol of Hashem's covenant.
