Chapter 38

(21) These are the accountings of the Tabernacle,These are the accountings of the Tabernacle | אֵלֶּה פְקוּדֵי הַמִּשְׁכָּן – The root "פקד" has many connotations, including remembering, paying special attention to, counting, or appointing. Here it appears to have the connotation of: "inventory" or the like. According to some commentators the phrase serves as a conclusion to the previous verses, referring either to the list of the Tabernacle's various vessels (Ibn Ezra, Sforno), or of the materials' used to build the structure itself (opinion rejected by Ramban). Alternatively, it is a heading for what follows, referring to the inventory of the various metals used in the Tabernacle's construction listed at the end of the chapter. the Tabernacle of Testimony, that were counted by the command of Moshe,by the command of Moshe | עַל פִּי – Literally: "by the mouth of Moshe". the work of the Levites, the work of the Levites | עֲבֹדַת הַלְוִיִּם – See R. Avraham b. HaRambam and Ralbag that the inventorying was a task done by the Levites, under the charge of Itamar. Alternatively: "for the service of the Levites", with the verse stating that the vessels that were inventoried were those that constituted the "service" of the Levites, for they were those who carried the vessels (Rashi, Ibn Ezra). under the charge of Itamar the son of Aharon, the priest. (22) And Betzalel the son of Uri the son of Chur , from the tribe of Yehuda, made all that Hashem commanded Moshe. (23) And with him was Oholiav the son of Achisamakh from the tribe of Dan, engraver, designer, and embroiderer in blue, purple, worm-scarlet, and linen. (24) All the gold that was used for the work, in all the work of the Holy: The gold of the wave offering was nine hundred twenty talents and seven hundred thirty shekels of the shekels of the sanctuary. (25) And the silver of those who were counted of the congregation: one hundred talents and one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five shekels of the shekels of the sanctuary. (26) A bekaa beka | בֶּקַע – This is a stone weight used to weigh the half shekel donations. Archaeologists have found several such weights engraved with the word "בקע", weighing a bit over five grams. a head, half a shekel of the shekels of the sanctuary, for all who passed by to be counted, from twenty years old and upwards, for the six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty. (27) The one hundred talents of silver were for casting the sockets of the Holy and the sockets of the veil, one hundred sockets for one hundred talents, one talent per socket. (28) And with the one thousand seven hundred and seventy-fiveone thousand seven hundred and seventy-five | הָאֶלֶף וּשְׁבַע הַמֵּאוֹת וַחֲמִשָּׁה וְשִׁבְעִים – The number refers to the shekels mentioned in verse 25. he made hooks for the pillars, and overlaid their tops and banded them. (29) And the copper of the wave offering: seventy talents and two thousand four hundred shekels. (30) And he made with it the sockets for the entrance to the Tabernacle, the copper altar and its copper grating, all the vessels of the altar, (31) the sockets of the courtyard, all around, the sockets of the gate of the courtyard, all the pegs for the Tabernacle and all the pegs for the courtyard, all around.

Chapter 39

(1) And from the blue, purple, and worm-scarlet they made garments of service to serve in the Holy and they made the holy garments of Aharon, as Hashem commanded Moshe. (2) He made the ephod of gold, blue, purple, worm-scarlet, and twined linen. (3) They beat out the sheets of gold and cut strands to work into the blue and into the purple, and into the worm-scarlet and into the linen, the work of a designer. (4) They made for it shoulder pieces joined to its two ends, and it was joined. (5) The band of his ephod that was on it was of its workmanship; of gold, blue, purple, worm-scarlet and twined linen, as Hashem commanded Moshe. (6) They made the sardonyx stones surrounded by golden filigrees, engraved as the work of a stone engraver with the names of the Children of Israel. (7) They put them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the Children of Israel, as Hashem commanded Moshe. (8) He made the breastplate, the work of a designer, like the workmanship of the ephod of gold, blue, purple, worm-scarlet, and twined linen. (9) It was square, they made it folded over, a span in length and a span in width, folded. (10) They set in it four rows of stones: a row of carnelian, olivine, carbuncle, the first row. (11) The second row: emerald, lapis lazuli, quartz. (12) The third row: jacinth, turquoise, amethyst. (13) The fourth row: aquamarine, sardonyx, and opal; set in golden filigrees in their settings. (14) The stones were with the names of the Children of Israel, twelve with their names, like seal engravings; each with his name for the twelve tribes. (15) They made on the breastplate twisted chains of rope-work, of pure gold. (16) They made two golden filigrees and two golden rings, and they placed the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate. (17) They placed the two golden ropes on the two rings on the ends of the breastplate. (18) And the two ends of the two ropes they placed on the two filigrees; and they placed them on the ephod's shoulder pieces, against its front. (19) They made two golden rings and put them on the two ends of the breastplate at its edge which is toward the side of the ephod, inwards. (20) They made two golden rings and placed them on the two shoulder pieces of the ephod, below, against its front, adjacent to its joining, above the band of the ephod. (22) He made the robe of the ephod of weaver's work, entirely blue. (23) The opening for his head was in its middle, like the opening of a coat of armor, with a border for the opening, all around, that it not be torn. (24) They made on its hems pomegranates of blue, purple, and worm-scarlet, twined. (25) They made bells of pure gold and they put the bells amid the pomegranates on the hem of the robe all around, amid the pomegranates. (26) A golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, on the hem of the robe all around, to serve, as Hashem commanded Moshe. (27) They made the tunic of linen, of weaver's work, for Aharon and his children, (28) and the turban of linen, and the splendid hatssplendid hats | פַּאֲרֵי הַמִּגְבָּעֹת – See Rashi and Radak who note that "פַּאֲרֵי" relates to the word "תפארת", splendor. Cf. Lekach Tov: "the tops of the hats". Alternatively "פְּאֵר" more generally refers to a headdress, as per its usage in Yechezkel 24:23 and 44:18. of linen, and the linen breeches of twined linen, (29) and the sash of twined linen, and blue, purple, and worm-scarlet, the work of the embroiderer, as Hashem commanded Moshe. (31) They placed it with a blue cord, to put it on the turban above, as Hashem commanded Moshe. (32) All the work of the Tent of Meeting was completed. The Children of Israel did according to all that Hashem had commanded Moshe; so they did. (33) They brought the Tabernacle to Moshe: the tent and all its vessels, its clasps, its boards, its crossbars, its pillars and its sockets, (34) the covering of red-dyed ram skins, the covering of sea cow hides, and the veil of the screen, (35) the ark of Testimony and its poles, and the cover, (36) the table and all its vessels, and the bread of Presence, (37) the pure Menorah and its lamps, the lamps of the array, lamps of the array | נֵרֹת הַמַּעֲרָכָה – See Ramban that the verse is emphasizing that the Menorah of the Tabernacle held only seven lamps, those that were arranged and lit, but no others that would serve a purely ornamental function. Cf. Shadal who reaches an almost opposite conclusion: "the lamps of decoration". He notes that since there was no service at night, the lamps also served a decorative function. and all its vessels, and the oil for the light, (38) the golden altar, the anointing oil, the fragrance spices, and the screen for the entrance to the tent, (39) the copper altar and its copper grating, its poles and all its vessels, the basin and its base, (40) the hangings of the courtyard, its pillars and its sockets, and the screen for the gate of the courtyard, its cords and its pegs, and all the vessels for the service of the Tabernacle, for the Tent of Meeting, (41) the service garments to serve in the Holy, the holy garments for Aharon the priest, and the garments of his sons to serve as priests. (42) According to all that Hashem commanded Moshe, so did the Children of Israel do all the work. (43) Moshe saw all the work, and behold, they had done it as Hashem commanded, so they did; and Moshe blessed them.

(34) The cloud covered the Tent of Meeting and the glory of Hashem filled the Tabernacle. (35) And Moshe could not come into the Tent of Meeting because the cloud dwelled upon it; and the glory of Hashem filled the Tabernacle. (36) And when the cloud would rise from on top of the Tabernacle, the Children of Israel would travel, in all their travels. (37) And if the cloud did not rise, they would not travel until the day of its rising. (38) For the cloud was upon the Tabernacle by day, and the fire was by night, in the eyes of all of the house of Israel, in all their travels.
