Chapter 25

(10) Hashem spoke to Moses, saying, (11) "Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the Children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn't consume the Children of Israel in my jealousy. (12) Therefore say, 'Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace. (13) And it shall be to him and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the Children of Israel.'" (14) Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers' house among the Simeonites. (15) The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers' house in Midian. (16) Hashem spoke to Moses, saying, (17) "Harass the Midianites, and strike them; (18) for they harassed you with their wiles, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor."

Chapter 26

(1) It happened after the plague, that Hashem spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying, (2) "Take a census of all the congregation of the Children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' houses, all who are able to go forth to war in Israel." (3) Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, (4) "Take a census, from twenty years old and upward; as Hashem commanded Moses and the Children of Israel." These are those that came out of the land of Egypt. (5) Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, the sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites; (6) of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites. (7) These are the families of the Reubenites. And those who were numbered of them were forty-three thousand seven hundred thirty. (8) The sons of Pallu: Eliab. (25) These are the families of Issachar according to those who were numbered of them, sixty-four thousand three hundred. (26) The sons of Zebulun after their families: of Sered, the family of the Seredites; of Elon, the family of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites. (27) These are the families of the Zebulunites according to those who were numbered of them, sixty thousand five hundred. (28) The sons of Joseph after their families: Manasseh and Ephraim. (29) The sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the family of the Machirites; and Machir became the father of Gilead; of Gilead, the family of the Gileadites. (30) These are the sons of Gilead: of Iezer, the family of the Iezerites; of Helek, the family of the Helekites; (31) and Asriel, the family of the Asrielites; and Shechem, the family of the Shechemites; (32) and Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites; and Hepher, the family of the Hepherites. (33) Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters. And the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. (34) These are the families of Manasseh; and those who were numbered of them were fifty-two thousand seven hundred. (35) These are the sons of Ephraim after their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthelahites; of Becher, the family of the Becherites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites. (36) These are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites. (37) These are the families of the sons of Ephraim according to those who were numbered of them, thirty-two thousand five hundred. These are the sons of Joseph after their families. (38) The sons of Benjamin after their families: of Bela, the family of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites; of Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites; (39) of Shephupham, the family of the Shuphamites; of Hupham, the family of the Huphamites. (40) The sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: the family of the Ardites; of Naaman, the family of the Naamites. (41) These are the sons of Benjamin after their families; and those who were numbered of them were forty-five thousand six hundred. (42) These are the sons of Dan after their families: of Shuham, the family of the Shuhamites. These are the families of Dan after their families. (43) All the families of the Shuhamites, according to those who were numbered of them, were sixty-four thousand four hundred. (44) The sons of Asher after their families: of Imnah, the family of the Imnites; of Ishvi, the family of the Ishvites; of Beriah, the family of the Berites. (45) Of the sons of Beriah: of Heber, the family of the Heberites; of Malchiel, the family of the Malchielites. (46) The name of the daughter of Asher was Serah. (47) These are the families of the sons of Asher according to those who were numbered of them, fifty-three thousand and four hundred. (50) These are the families of Naphtali according to their families; and those who were numbered of them were forty-five thousand four hundred. (51) These are those who were numbered of the Children of Israel, six hundred one thousand seven hundred thirty. (52) Hashem spoke to Moses, saying, (53) "To these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names. (54) To the more you shall give more inheritance, and to the fewer you shall give less inheritance. To everyone according to those who were numbered of him shall his inheritance be given. (55) Notwithstanding, the land shall be divided by lot. According to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. (56) According to the lot shall their inheritance be divided between the many and the few." (57) These are those who were numbered of the Levites after their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites. (58) These are the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korahites. Kohath became the father of Amram. (59) The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt: and she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister. (60) To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. (61) Nadab and Abihu died when they offered strange fire before Hashem. (62) Those who were numbered of them were twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward, for they were not numbered among the Children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the Children of Israel. (63) These are those who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the Children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. (64) But among these there was not a man of them who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the Children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. (65) For Hashem had said of them, "They shall surely die in the wilderness." There was not left a man of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

Chapter 27

(1) Then drew near the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah. (2) They stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, at the door of the Tent of Meeting, saying, (3) "Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against Hashem in the company of Korah, but he died in his own sin; and he had no sons. (4) Why should the name of our father be taken away from among his family, because he had no son? Give to us a possession among the brothers of our father." (5) Moses brought their cause before Hashem. (6) Hashem spoke to Moses, saying, (7) "The daughters of Zelophehad speak right. You shall surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers; and you shall cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them. (8) You shall speak to the Children of Israel, saying, 'If a man dies, and has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter. (9) If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. (10) If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. (11) If his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his kinsman who is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it; and it shall be to the Children of Israel a statute and ordinance, as Hashem commanded Moses.'" (12) Hashem said to Moses, "Go up into this mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the Children of Israel. (13) When you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was gathered; (14) because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the waters before their eyes." These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin. (15) Moses spoke to Hashem, saying, (16) "Let Hashem, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation, (17) who may go out before them, and who may come in before them, and who may lead them out, and who may bring them in; that the congregation of Hashem not be as sheep which have no shepherd." (18) Hashem said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him; (19) and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and commission him in their sight. (20) You shall put of your honor on him, that all the congregation of the Children of Israel may obey. (21) He shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before Hashem. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the Children of Israel with him, even all the congregation." (22) Moses did as Hashem commanded him; and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation. (23) And he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as Hashem spoke by Moses.

Chapter 28

(1) Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying, (2) "Command the Children of Israel, and say to them, 'My sacrifices, My food for My fire-offerings,My food for My fire-offerings | לַחְמִי לְאִשַּׁי – The word "לחם", often translated as "bread", can refer also to other food, including meat (Ibn Ezra on Shemot 16:4). Cf. R"Y Bekhor Shor that, since bread is food that is eaten regularly, the continual burnt-offering, which is sacrificed daily, can also be so called. Hoil Moshe, instead, suggests that the sacrifices are here referred to as "לחם" because they serve to feed the fire. His interpretation also lessens the anthropomorphic feeling of the verse; the sacrifices are not food for God but to nourish the fire. My soothing fragrance,My soothing fragrance | רֵיחַ נִיחֹחִי – The phrase appears only in the context of sacrifices. It might relate to the verb "נוח", meaning to rest, or in the more active form, to relieve. See Ibn Ezra on Bereshit 8:21 that the smell of the sacrifices serves to soothe God's anger (in Biblical Hebrew, anger is associated with the nose, "חֲרוֹן אַף", so its antidote, too, is associated with the nose). Alternatively: "pleasing fragrance". you shall take care to sacrifice to Me in its appointed time.' (3) You shall say to them, 'This is the fire-offering that you shall sacrifice to Hashem: two unblemished year-old lambs each day, as a continual burnt offering. (4) The one lambThe one lamb | אֶת הַכֶּבֶשׂ אֶחָד – The grammatical form of the phrase is difficult as one would have expected a definite article in front of the word "אֶחָד". See Ibn Ezra that the "ה" of "הַכֶּבֶשׂ" should be applied to the word "אֶחָד" as well ("האות ה״א מושך עצמו ואחר עמו"); he notes that this is a common phenomenon in Tanakh. Cf. R. Hirsch who punctuates the clause differently, suggesting: "the lamb, one, you should make...", having the verse emphasize that just one lamb is to be offered in the morning. See also Abarbanel that the anomalous language is meant to teach that the morning offering should be the higher quality one (the lamb that is the "number one" should be brought). you shall makeYou shall make | תַּעֲשֶׂה – The connotation might be: "offer", "prepare", or "perform its sacrificial service". in the morning, and the second lamb you shall make at twilight,at twilight |בֵּין הָעַרְבָּיִם – See the note on Shemot 12:6 and the opinion of the Sages there that this refers to the afternoon. (5) along with one tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a grain offering, mixed with one quarter of a hin of pressed oil. (6) A continual burnt offering like the one made at Mount Sinailike the one made at Mount Sinai | הָעֲשֻׂיָה בְּהַר סִינַי לְרֵיחַ – Literally: "that was done/made on Mount Sinai", but see Rashi and others that the connotation is: "like that offered at Sinai..." See Ibn Ezra that this clause supports the position that after the Israelites' stay at Sinai, the people did not offer burnt offerings throughout the rest of their wanderings in the wilderness. Only with arrival in the land did they resume such service. as a soothing fragrance, a fire-offering for Hashem. (7) Its libation shall beIts libation shall be | וְנִסְכּוֹ – The words "shall be" have been inserted into the translation for clarity, and appear to be assumed by the Hebrew. a quarter of a hin for the one lamb; on the holyon the holy | בַּקֹּדֶשׁ – See Rashi that the verse refers to pouring libations on the holy altar. Alternatively: "in the sanctuary" or perhaps: "in holy [vessels]", i.e. that the libation should be poured from holy vessels (Targum Yerushlami (Yonatan)). you shall pour a libation of strong drinkstrong drink | שֵׁכָר – See Rashi that this refers to aged wine that is capable of intoxicating. Cf. Ramban that it refers to undiluted wine. for Hashem. (8) And the second lamb you shall make at twilight; as the grain offering of the morning and its libation you shall make it, a fire offering, a soothing fragrance to Hashem. (9) On the Sabbath day two male lambs a year old without blemish, and two tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour for a meal offering, mixed with oil, and its drink offering. (10) This is the burnt offering of every Sabbath, besides the continual burnt offering and its drink offering. (11) In the beginnings of your months you shall offer a burnt offering to Hashem: two young bulls and one ram, seven male lambs a year old without blemish; (12) and three tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour for a meal offering, mixed with oil, for each bull; and two tenth parts of fine flour for a meal offering, mixed with oil, for the one ram; (13) and a tenth part of fine flour mixed with oil for a meal offering to every lamb; for a burnt offering of a pleasant aroma, an offering made by fire to Hashem. (14) Their drink offerings shall be half a hin of wine for a bull, and the third part of a hin for the ram, and the fourth part of a hin for a lamb. This is the burnt offering of every month throughout the months of the year. (15) One male goat for a sin offering to Hashem; it shall be offered besides the continual burnt offering, and its drink offering. (16) In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, is Hashem's Passover. (17) On the fifteenth day of this month shall be a feast; seven days unleavened bread shall be eaten. (18) The first day shall be a holy convocation; you shall do no servile work. (19) But you shall offer an offering made by fire, a burnt offering to Hashem: two young bulls, and one ram, and seven male lambs a year old; they shall be to you without blemish, (20) and their meal offering: fine flour mixed with oil; you shall offer three tenth parts for a bull, and two tenth parts for the ram. (21) You shall offer a tenth part for every lamb of the seven lambs, (22) and one male goat for a sin offering, to make atonement for you. (23) You shall offer these besides the burnt offering of the morning, which is for a continual burnt offering. (24) In this way you shall offer daily, for seven days, the food of the offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to Hashem. It shall be offered besides the continual burnt offering and its drink offering. (25) On the seventh day you shall have a holy convocation: you shall do no servile work. (26) Also on the day of the first fruits, when you offer a new meal offering to Hashem in your feast of weeks, you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no servile work. (27) But you shall offer a burnt offering for a pleasant aroma to Hashem: two young bulls, one ram, seven male lambs a year old, (28) and their meal offering: fine flour mixed with oil, three tenth parts for each bull, two tenth parts for the one ram, (29) a tenth part for every lamb of the seven lambs; (30) one male goat, to make atonement for you.
