פרק ג

(כג) וָאֶתְחַנַּן אֶל י״י בָּעֵת הַהִוא לֵאמֹר. (כד) אֲדֹנָי יֱ־הֹוִה אַתָּה הַחִלּוֹתָ לְהַרְאוֹת אֶת עַבְדְּךָ אֶת גׇּדְלְךָ וְאֶת יָדְךָ הַחֲזָקָה אֲשֶׁר מִי אֵל בַּשָּׁמַיִם וּבָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר יַעֲשֶׂה כְמַעֲשֶׂיךָ וְכִגְבוּרֹתֶךָ. (כה) אֶעְבְּרָה נָּא וְאֶרְאֶה אֶת הָאָרֶץ הַטּוֹבָה אֲשֶׁר בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן הָהָר הַטּוֹב הַזֶּה וְהַלְּבָנֹן. (כו) וַיִּתְעַבֵּר י״י בִּי לְמַעַנְכֶם וְלֹא שָׁמַע אֵלָי וַיֹּאמֶר י״י אֵלַי רַב לָךְ אַל תּוֹסֶף דַּבֵּר אֵלַי עוֹד בַּדָּבָר הַזֶּה. (כז) עֲלֵה רֹאשׁ הַפִּסְגָּה וְשָׂא עֵינֶיךָ יָמָּה וְצָפֹנָה וְתֵימָנָה וּמִזְרָחָה וּרְאֵה בְעֵינֶיךָ כִּי לֹא תַעֲבֹר אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן הַזֶּה. (כח) וְצַו אֶת יְהוֹשֻׁעַ וְחַזְּקֵהוּ וְאַמְּצֵהוּ כִּי הוּא יַעֲבֹר לִפְנֵי הָעָם הַזֶּה וְהוּא יַנְחִיל אוֹתָם אֶת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר תִּרְאֶה. (כט) וַנֵּשֶׁב בַּגָּיְא מוּל בֵּית פְּעוֹר.

פרק ד

(א) וְעַתָּה יִשְׂרָאֵל שְׁמַע אֶל הַחֻקִּים וְאֶל הַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְלַמֵּד אֶתְכֶם לַעֲשׂוֹת לְמַעַן תִּחְיוּ וּבָאתֶם וִירִשְׁתֶּם אֶת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר י״י אֱלֹהֵי אֲבֹתֵיכֶם נֹתֵן לָכֶם. (ב) לֹא תֹסִפוּ עַל הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוֶּה אֶתְכֶם וְלֹא תִגְרְעוּ מִמֶּנּוּ לִשְׁמֹר אֶת מִצְוֺת י״י אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוֶּה אֶתְכֶם. (ג) עֵינֵיכֶם הָרֹאוֹת אֵת אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה י״י בְּבַעַל פְּעוֹר כִּי כׇל הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר הָלַךְ אַחֲרֵי בַעַל פְּעוֹר הִשְׁמִידוֹ י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ מִקִּרְבֶּךָ. (ד) וְאַתֶּם הַדְּבֵקִים בַּי״י אֱלֹהֵיכֶם חַיִּים כֻּלְּכֶם הַיּוֹם. (ה) רְאֵה לִמַּדְתִּי אֶתְכֶם חֻקִּים וּמִשְׁפָּטִים כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוַּנִי י״י אֱלֹהָי לַעֲשׂוֹת כֵּן בְּקֶרֶב הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם בָּאִים שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ. (ו) וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם וַעֲשִׂיתֶם כִּי הִוא חׇכְמַתְכֶם וּבִינַתְכֶם לְעֵינֵי הָעַמִּים אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁמְעוּן אֵת כׇּל הַחֻקִּים הָאֵלֶּה וְאָמְרוּ רַק עַם חָכָם וְנָבוֹן הַגּוֹי הַגָּדוֹל הַזֶּה. (ז) כִּי מִי גוֹי גָּדוֹל אֲשֶׁר לוֹ אֱלֹהִים קְרֹבִים אֵלָיו כַּי״י אֱלֹהֵינוּ בְּכׇל קׇרְאֵנוּ אֵלָיו. (ח) וּמִי גּוֹי גָּדוֹל אֲשֶׁר לוֹ חֻקִּים וּמִשְׁפָּטִים צַדִּיקִם כְּכֹל הַתּוֹרָה הַזֹּאת אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי נֹתֵן לִפְנֵיכֶם הַיּוֹם. (ט) רַק הִשָּׁמֶר לְךָ וּשְׁמֹר נַפְשְׁךָ מְאֹד פֶּן תִּשְׁכַּח אֶת הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר רָאוּ עֵינֶיךָ וּפֶן יָסוּרוּ מִלְּבָבְךָ כֹּל יְמֵי חַיֶּיךָ וְהוֹדַעְתָּם לְבָנֶיךָ וְלִבְנֵי בָנֶיךָ. (י) יוֹם אֲשֶׁר עָמַדְתָּ לִפְנֵי י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּחֹרֵב בֶּאֱמֹר י״י אֵלַי הַקְהֶל לִי אֶת הָעָם וְאַשְׁמִעֵם אֶת דְּבָרָי אֲשֶׁר יִלְמְדוּן לְיִרְאָה אֹתִי כׇּל הַיָּמִים אֲשֶׁר הֵם חַיִּים עַל הָאֲדָמָה וְאֶת בְּנֵיהֶם יְלַמֵּדוּן. (יא) וַתִּקְרְבוּן וַתַּעַמְדוּן תַּחַת הָהָר וְהָהָר בֹּעֵר בָּאֵשׁ עַד לֵב הַשָּׁמַיִם חֹשֶׁךְ עָנָן וַעֲרָפֶל. (יב) וַיְדַבֵּר י״י אֲלֵיכֶם מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ קוֹל דְּבָרִים אַתֶּם שֹׁמְעִים וּתְמוּנָה אֵינְכֶם רֹאִים זוּלָתִי קוֹל. (יג) וַיַּגֵּד לָכֶם אֶת בְּרִיתוֹ אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה אֶתְכֶם לַעֲשׂוֹת עֲשֶׂרֶת הַדְּבָרִים וַיִּכְתְּבֵם עַל שְׁנֵי לֻחוֹת אֲבָנִים. (יד) וְאֹתִי צִוָּה י״י בָּעֵת הַהִוא לְלַמֵּד אֶתְכֶם חֻקִּים וּמִשְׁפָּטִים לַעֲשֹׂתְכֶם אֹתָם בָּאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ. (טו) וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּם מְאֹד לְנַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם כִּי לֹא רְאִיתֶם כׇּל תְּמוּנָה בְּיוֹם דִּבֶּר י״י אֲלֵיכֶם בְּחֹרֵב מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ. (טז) פֶּן תַּשְׁחִתוּן וַעֲשִׂיתֶם לָכֶם פֶּסֶל תְּמוּנַת כׇּל סָמֶל תַּבְנִית זָכָר אוֹ נְקֵבָה. (יז) תַּבְנִית כׇּל בְּהֵמָה אֲשֶׁר בָּאָרֶץ תַּבְנִית כׇּל צִפּוֹר כָּנָף אֲשֶׁר תָּעוּף בַּשָּׁמָיִם. (יח) תַּבְנִית כׇּל רֹמֵשׂ בָּאֲדָמָה תַּבְנִית כׇּל דָּגָה אֲשֶׁר בַּמַּיִם מִתַּחַת לָאָרֶץ. (יט) וּפֶן תִּשָּׂא עֵינֶיךָ הַשָּׁמַיְמָה וְרָאִיתָ אֶת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ וְאֶת הַיָּרֵחַ וְאֶת הַכּוֹכָבִים כֹּל צְבָא הַשָּׁמַיִם וְנִדַּחְתָּ וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתָ לָהֶם וַעֲבַדְתָּם אֲשֶׁר חָלַק י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֹתָם לְכֹל הָעַמִּים תַּחַת כׇּל הַשָּׁמָיִם. (כ) וְאֶתְכֶם לָקַח י״י וַיּוֹצִא אֶתְכֶם מִכּוּר הַבַּרְזֶל מִמִּצְרָיִם לִהְיוֹת לוֹ לְעַם נַחֲלָה כַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה. (כא) וַי״י הִתְאַנַּף בִּי עַל דִּבְרֵיכֶם וַיִּשָּׁבַע לְבִלְתִּי עׇבְרִי אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן וּלְבִלְתִּי בֹא אֶל הָאָרֶץ הַטּוֹבָה אֲשֶׁר י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לְךָ נַחֲלָה. (כב) כִּי אָנֹכִי מֵת בָּאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת אֵינֶנִּי עֹבֵר אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן וְאַתֶּם עֹבְרִים וִירִשְׁתֶּם אֶת הָאָרֶץ הַטּוֹבָה הַזֹּאת. (כג) הִשָּׁמְרוּ לָכֶם פֶּן תִּשְׁכְּחוּ אֶת בְּרִית י״י אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֲשֶׁר כָּרַת עִמָּכֶם וַעֲשִׂיתֶם לָכֶם פֶּסֶל תְּמוּנַת כֹּל אֲשֶׁר צִוְּךָ י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ. (כד) כִּי י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֵשׁ אֹכְלָה הוּא אֵל קַנָּא. (כה) כִּי תוֹלִיד בָּנִים וּבְנֵי בָנִים וְנוֹשַׁנְתֶּם בָּאָרֶץ וְהִשְׁחַתֶּם וַעֲשִׂיתֶם פֶּסֶל תְּמוּנַת כֹּל וַעֲשִׂיתֶם הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ לְהַכְעִיסוֹ. (כו) הַעִידֹתִי בָכֶם הַיּוֹם אֶת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת הָאָרֶץ כִּי אָבֹד תֹּאבֵדוּן מַהֵר מֵעַל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ לֹא תַאֲרִיכֻן יָמִים עָלֶיהָ כִּי הִשָּׁמֵד תִּשָּׁמֵדוּן. (כז) וְהֵפִיץ י״י אֶתְכֶם בָּעַמִּים וְנִשְׁאַרְתֶּם מְתֵי מִסְפָּר בַּגּוֹיִם אֲשֶׁר יְנַהֵג י״י אֶתְכֶם שָׁמָּה. (כח) וַעֲבַדְתֶּם שָׁם אֱלֹהִים מַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵי אָדָם עֵץ וָאֶבֶן אֲשֶׁר לֹא יִרְאוּן וְלֹא יִשְׁמְעוּן וְלֹא יֹאכְלוּן וְלֹא יְרִיחֻן. (כט) וּבִקַּשְׁתֶּם מִשָּׁם אֶת י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ וּמָצָאתָ כִּי תִדְרְשֶׁנּוּ בְּכׇל לְבָבְךָ וּבְכׇל נַפְשֶׁךָ. (ל) בַּצַּר לְךָ וּמְצָאוּךָ כֹּל הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה בְּאַחֲרִית הַיָּמִים וְשַׁבְתָּ עַד י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ וְשָׁמַעְתָּ בְּקֹלוֹ. (לא) כִּי אֵל רַחוּם י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ לֹא יַרְפְּךָ וְלֹא יַשְׁחִיתֶךָ וְלֹא יִשְׁכַּח אֶת בְּרִית אֲבֹתֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לָהֶם. (לב) כִּי שְׁאַל נָא לְיָמִים רִאשֹׁנִים אֲשֶׁר הָיוּ לְפָנֶיךָ לְמִן הַיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים אָדָם עַל הָאָרֶץ וּלְמִקְצֵה הַשָּׁמַיִם וְעַד קְצֵה הַשָּׁמָיִם הֲנִהְיָה כַּדָּבָר הַגָּדוֹל הַזֶּה אוֹ הֲנִשְׁמַע כָּמֹהוּ. (לג) הֲשָׁמַע עָם קוֹל אֱלֹהִים מְדַבֵּר מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁמַעְתָּ אַתָּה וַיֶּחִי. (לד) אוֹ הֲנִסָּה אֱלֹהִים לָבוֹא לָקַחַת לוֹ גוֹי מִקֶּרֶב גּוֹי בְּמַסֹּת בְּאֹתֹת וּבְמוֹפְתִים וּבְמִלְחָמָה וּבְיָד חֲזָקָה וּבִזְרוֹעַ נְטוּיָה וּבְמוֹרָאִים גְּדֹלִים כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה לָכֶם י״י אֱלֹהֵיכֶם בְּמִצְרַיִם לְעֵינֶיךָ. (לה) אַתָּה הׇרְאֵתָ לָדַעַת כִּי י״י הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים אֵין עוֹד מִלְּבַדּוֹ. (לו) מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם הִשְׁמִיעֲךָ אֶת קֹלוֹ לְיַסְּרֶךָּ וְעַל הָאָרֶץ הֶרְאֲךָ אֶת אִשּׁוֹ הַגְּדוֹלָה וּדְבָרָיו שָׁמַעְתָּ מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ. (לז) וְתַחַת כִּי אָהַב אֶת אֲבֹתֶיךָ וַיִּבְחַר בְּזַרְעוֹ אַחֲרָיו וַיּוֹצִאֲךָ בְּפָנָיו בְּכֹחוֹ הַגָּדֹל מִמִּצְרָיִם. (לח) לְהוֹרִישׁ גּוֹיִם גְּדֹלִים וַעֲצֻמִים מִמְּךָ מִפָּנֶיךָ לַהֲבִיאֲךָ לָתֶת לְךָ אֶת אַרְצָם נַחֲלָה כַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה. (לט) וְיָדַעְתָּ הַיּוֹם וַהֲשֵׁבֹתָ אֶל לְבָבֶךָ כִּי י״י הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים בַּשָּׁמַיִם מִמַּעַל וְעַל הָאָרֶץ מִתָּחַת אֵין עוֹד. (מ) וְשָׁמַרְתָּ אֶת חֻקָּיו וְאֶת מִצְוֺתָיו אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר יִיטַב לְךָ וּלְבָנֶיךָ אַחֲרֶיךָ וּלְמַעַן תַּאֲרִיךְ יָמִים עַל הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לְךָ כׇּל הַיָּמִים. (מא) אָז יַבְדִּיל מֹשֶׁה שָׁלֹשׁ עָרִים בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן מִזְרְחָה שָׁמֶשׁ. (מב) לָנֻס שָׁמָּה רוֹצֵחַ אֲשֶׁר יִרְצַח אֶת רֵעֵהוּ בִּבְלִי דַעַת וְהוּא לֹא שֹׂנֵא לוֹ מִתְּמֹל שִׁלְשֹׁם וְנָס אֶל אַחַת מִן הֶעָרִים הָאֵל וָחָי. (מג) אֶת בֶּצֶר בַּמִּדְבָּר בְּאֶרֶץ הַמִּישֹׁר לָראוּבֵנִי וְאֶת רָאמֹת בַּגִּלְעָד לַגָּדִי וְאֶת גּוֹלָן בַּבָּשָׁן לַמְנַשִּׁי. (מד) וְזֹאת הַתּוֹרָה אֲשֶׁר שָׂם מֹשֶׁה לִפְנֵי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. (מה) אֵלֶּה הָעֵדֹת וְהַחֻקִּים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר מֹשֶׁה אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּצֵאתָם מִמִּצְרָיִם. (מו) בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן בַּגַּיְא מוּל בֵּית פְּעוֹר בְּאֶרֶץ סִיחֹן מֶלֶךְ הָאֱמֹרִי אֲשֶׁר יוֹשֵׁב בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן אֲשֶׁר הִכָּה מֹשֶׁה וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּצֵאתָם מִמִּצְרָיִם. (מז) וַיִּירְשׁוּ אֶת אַרְצוֹ וְאֶת אֶרֶץ עוֹג מֶלֶךְ הַבָּשָׁן שְׁנֵי מַלְכֵי הָאֱמֹרִי אֲשֶׁר בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן מִזְרַח שָׁמֶשׁ. (מח) מֵעֲרֹעֵר אֲשֶׁר עַל שְׂפַת נַחַל אַרְנֹן וְעַד הַר שִׂיאֹן הוּא חֶרְמוֹן. (מט) וְכׇל הָעֲרָבָה עֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן מִזְרָחָה וְעַד יָם הָעֲרָבָה תַּחַת אַשְׁדֹּת הַפִּסְגָּה.

פרק ה

(א) וַיִּקְרָא מֹשֶׁה אֶל כׇּל יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת הַחֻקִּים וְאֶת הַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי דֹּבֵר בְּאׇזְנֵיכֶם הַיּוֹם וּלְמַדְתֶּם אֹתָם וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם לַעֲשֹׂתָם. (ב) י״י אֱלֹהֵינוּ כָּרַת עִמָּנוּ בְּרִית בְּחֹרֵב. (ג) לֹא אֶת אֲבֹתֵינוּ כָּרַת י״י אֶת הַבְּרִית הַזֹּאת כִּי אִתָּנוּ אֲנַחְנוּ אֵלֶּה פֹה הַיּוֹם כֻּלָּנוּ חַיִּים. (ד) פָּנִים בְּפָנִים דִּבֶּר י״י עִמָּכֶם בָּהָר מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ. (ה) אָנֹכִי עֹמֵד בֵּין י״י וּבֵינֵיכֶם בָּעֵת הַהִוא לְהַגִּיד לָכֶם אֶת דְּבַר י״י כִּי יְרֵאתֶם מִפְּנֵי הָאֵשׁ וְלֹא עֲלִיתֶם בָּהָר לֵאמֹר. (ו) • בתצוגה כאן משולבים "טעם עליון" ו"טעם תחתון", כולל סימני רפה (מעל האות) כאשר קיים חילוק כזה ביניהם.
מספור הפסוקים בהמשך הפרק הוא לפי טעם תחתון, בו "אנכי... על פני" מהווה פסוק אחד, ו"לא תרצח... עד עד שוא" מהווה פסוק אחד. להרחבה בנושא זה, עיינו מאמרו של מ' ברויאר, "חלוקת עשרת הדיברות לפסוקים ולדיברות", עשרת הדיברות בראי הדורות, ירושלים תשמ"ו: 254-223. (ישנן מהדורות אחרות שבהן מספור הפסוקים הוא לפי טעם עליון או מערבב בין טעם עליון וטעם תחתון.)
• בשתי מלים ("פָּנָי", "מִתָּחַת") ההבדל בין הטעם העליון והטעם התחתון גורם להבדל אף בניקוד. במלים אלה, מוצג רק הניקוד של הטעם התחתון, והניקוד של הטעם העליון מופיע בהערה.
• במלים שבהן הטעם התחתון שונה מן הטעם העליון ושני הטעמים מופיעים באותה אות של המלה, בדרך כלל מוצג הטעם התחתון לפני הטעם העליון. אולם בכמה מקרים ("עֲבָדִים", "יִהְיֶה", "תִּרְצָח", "תִּנְאָף") מגבלות הפונטים גורמות לכך שמוצג הטעם העליון קודם הטעם התחתון.

(ט) וְעֹשֶׂה חֶסֶד לַאֲלָפִים לְאֹהֲבַי וּלְשֹׁמְרֵי [מִצְוֺתָי] (מצותו). (י) לֹא תִשָּׂא אֶת שֵׁם י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַשָּׁוְא כִּי לֹא יְנַקֶּה י״י אֵת אֲשֶׁר יִשָּׂא אֶת שְׁמוֹ לַשָּׁוְא. (יא) שָׁמוֹר אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת לְקַדְּשׁוֹ כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוְּךָ י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ. (יב) שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים תַּעֲבֹד וְעָשִׂיתָ כׇּל מְלַאכְתֶּךָ. (יג) וְיוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי שַׁבָּת לַי״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ לֹא תַעֲשֶׂה כׇל מְלָאכָה אַתָּה וּבִנְךָ וּבִתֶּךָ וְעַבְדְּךָ וַאֲמָתֶךָ וְשׁוֹרְךָ וַחֲמֹרְךָ וְכׇל בְּהֶמְתֶּךָ וְגֵרְךָ אֲשֶׁר בִּשְׁעָרֶיךָ לְמַעַן יָנוּחַ עַבְדְּךָ וַאֲמָתְךָ כָּמוֹךָ. (טו) כַּבֵּד אֶת אָבִיךָ וְאֶת אִמֶּךָ כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוְּךָ י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ לְמַעַן יַאֲרִיכֻן יָמֶיךָ וּלְמַעַן יִיטַב לָךְ עַל הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לָךְ. (טז) לֹא תִּרְצָח. וְלֹא תִּנְאָף. וְלֹא תִּגְנֹב. וְלֹא תַעֲנֶה בְרֵעֲךָ עֵד שָׁוְא. (יז) וְלֹא תַחְמֹד אֵשֶׁת רֵעֶךָ וְלֹא תִתְאַוֶּה בֵּית רֵעֶךָ שָׂדֵהוּ וְעַבְדּוֹ וַאֲמָתוֹ שׁוֹרוֹ וַחֲמֹרוֹ וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר לְרֵעֶךָ. (יח) אֶת הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה דִּבֶּר י״י אֶל כׇּל קְהַלְכֶם בָּהָר מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ הֶעָנָן וְהָעֲרָפֶל קוֹל גָּדוֹל וְלֹא יָסָף וַיִּכְתְּבֵם עַל שְׁנֵי לֻחֹת אֲבָנִים וַיִּתְּנֵם אֵלָי. (יט) וַיְהִי כְּשׇׁמְעֲכֶם אֶת הַקּוֹל מִתּוֹךְ הַחֹשֶׁךְ וְהָהָר בֹּעֵר בָּאֵשׁ וַתִּקְרְבוּן אֵלַי כׇּל רָאשֵׁי שִׁבְטֵיכֶם וְזִקְנֵיכֶם. (כ) וַתֹּאמְרוּ הֵן הֶרְאָנוּ י״י אֱלֹהֵינוּ אֶת כְּבֹדוֹ וְאֶת גׇּדְלוֹ וְאֶת קֹלוֹ שָׁמַעְנוּ מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה רָאִינוּ כִּי יְדַבֵּר אֱלֹהִים אֶת הָאָדָם וָחָי. (כא) וְעַתָּה לָמָּה נָמוּת כִּי תֹאכְלֵנוּ הָאֵשׁ הַגְּדֹלָה הַזֹּאת אִם יֹסְפִים אֲנַחְנוּ לִשְׁמֹעַ אֶת קוֹל י״י אֱלֹהֵינוּ עוֹד וָמָתְנוּ. (כב) כִּי מִי כׇל בָּשָׂר אֲשֶׁר שָׁמַע קוֹל אֱלֹהִים חַיִּים מְדַבֵּר מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ כָּמֹנוּ וַיֶּחִי. (כג) קְרַב אַתָּה וּשְׁמָע אֵת כׇּל אֲשֶׁר יֹאמַר י״י אֱלֹהֵינוּ וְאַתְּ תְּדַבֵּר אֵלֵינוּ אֵת כׇּל אֲשֶׁר יְדַבֵּר י״י אֱלֹהֵינוּ אֵלֶיךָ וְשָׁמַעְנוּ וְעָשִׂינוּ. (כד) וַיִּשְׁמַע י״י אֶת קוֹל דִּבְרֵיכֶם בְּדַבֶּרְכֶם אֵלָי וַיֹּאמֶר י״י אֵלַי שָׁמַעְתִּי אֶת קוֹל דִּבְרֵי הָעָם הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר דִּבְּרוּ אֵלֶיךָ הֵיטִיבוּ כׇּל אֲשֶׁר דִּבֵּרוּ. (כה) מִי יִתֵּן וְהָיָה לְבָבָם זֶה לָהֶם לְיִרְאָה אֹתִי וְלִשְׁמֹר אֶת כׇּל מִצְוֺתַי כׇּל הַיָּמִים לְמַעַן יִיטַב לָהֶם וְלִבְנֵיהֶם לְעֹלָם. (כו) לֵךְ אֱמֹר לָהֶם שׁוּבוּ לָכֶם לְאׇהֳלֵיכֶם. (כז) וְאַתָּה פֹּה עֲמֹד עִמָּדִי וַאֲדַבְּרָה אֵלֶיךָ אֵת כׇּל הַמִּצְוָה וְהַחֻקִּים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר תְּלַמְּדֵם וְעָשׂוּ בָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי נֹתֵן לָהֶם לְרִשְׁתָּהּ. (כח) וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם לַעֲשׂוֹת כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה י״י אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֶתְכֶם לֹא תָסֻרוּ יָמִין וּשְׂמֹאל. (כט) בְּכׇל הַדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה י״י אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֶתְכֶם תֵּלֵכוּ לְמַעַן תִּחְיוּן וְטוֹב לָכֶם וְהַאֲרַכְתֶּם יָמִים בָּאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר תִּירָשׁוּן.

פרק ו

(א) וְזֹאת הַמִּצְוָה הַחֻקִּים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה י״י אֱלֹהֵיכֶם לְלַמֵּד אֶתְכֶם לַעֲשׂוֹת בָּאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ. (ב) לְמַעַן תִּירָא אֶת י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ לִשְׁמֹר אֶת כׇּל חֻקֹּתָיו וּמִצְוֺתָיו אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוֶּךָ אַתָּה וּבִנְךָ וּבֶן בִּנְךָ כֹּל יְמֵי חַיֶּיךָ וּלְמַעַן יַאֲרִכֻן יָמֶיךָ. (ג) וְשָׁמַעְתָּ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְשָׁמַרְתָּ לַעֲשׂוֹת אֲשֶׁר יִיטַב לְךָ וַאֲשֶׁר תִּרְבּוּן מְאֹד כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר י״י אֱלֹהֵי אֲבֹתֶיךָ לָךְ אֶרֶץ זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבָשׁ. (ד) שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל י״י אֱלֹהֵינוּ י״י אֶחָד. (ה) וְאָהַבְתָּ אֵת י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּכׇל לְבָבְךָ וּבְכׇל נַפְשְׁךָ וּבְכׇל מְאֹדֶךָ. (ו) וְהָיוּ הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם עַל לְבָבֶךָ. (ז) וְשִׁנַּנְתָּם לְבָנֶיךָ וְדִבַּרְתָּ בָּם בְּשִׁבְתְּךָ בְּבֵיתֶךָ וּבְלֶכְתְּךָ בַדֶּרֶךְ וּבְשׇׁכְבְּךָ וּבְקוּמֶךָ. (ח) וּקְשַׁרְתָּם לְאוֹת עַל יָדֶךָ וְהָיוּ לְטֹטָפֹת בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ. (ט) וּכְתַבְתָּם עַל מְזֻזוֹת בֵּיתֶךָ וּבִשְׁעָרֶיךָ. (י) וְהָיָה כִּי יְבִיאֲךָ י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לַאֲבֹתֶיךָ לְאַבְרָהָם לְיִצְחָק וּלְיַעֲקֹב לָתֶת לָךְ עָרִים גְּדֹלֹת וְטֹבֹת אֲשֶׁר לֹא בָנִיתָ. (יא) וּבָתִּים מְלֵאִים כׇּל טוּב אֲשֶׁר לֹא מִלֵּאתָ וּבֹרֹת חֲצוּבִים אֲשֶׁר לֹא חָצַבְתָּ כְּרָמִים וְזֵיתִים אֲשֶׁר לֹא נָטָעְתָּ וְאָכַלְתָּ וְשָׂבָעְתָּ. (יב) הִשָּׁמֶר לְךָ פֶּן תִּשְׁכַּח אֶת י״י אֲשֶׁר הוֹצִיאֲךָ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם מִבֵּית עֲבָדִים. (יג) אֶת י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ תִּירָא וְאֹתוֹ תַעֲבֹד וּבִשְׁמוֹ תִּשָּׁבֵעַ. (יד) לֹא תֵלְכוּן אַחֲרֵי אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים מֵאֱלֹהֵי הָעַמִּים אֲשֶׁר סְבִיבוֹתֵיכֶם. (טו) כִּי אֵל קַנָּא י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּקִרְבֶּךָ פֶּן יֶחֱרֶה אַף י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ בָּךְ וְהִשְׁמִידְךָ מֵעַל פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה. (טז) לֹא תְנַסּוּ אֶת י״י אֱלֹהֵיכֶם כַּאֲשֶׁר נִסִּיתֶם בַּמַּסָּה. (יז) שָׁמוֹר תִּשְׁמְרוּן אֶת מִצְוֺת י״י אֱלֹהֵיכֶם וְעֵדֹתָיו וְחֻקָּיו אֲשֶׁר צִוָּךְ. (יח) וְעָשִׂיתָ הַיָּשָׁר וְהַטּוֹב בְּעֵינֵי י״י לְמַעַן יִיטַב לָךְ וּבָאתָ וְיָרַשְׁתָּ אֶת הָאָרֶץ הַטֹּבָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע י״י לַאֲבֹתֶיךָ. (יט) לַהֲדֹף אֶת כׇּל אֹיְבֶיךָ מִפָּנֶיךָ כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר י״י. (כ) כִּי יִשְׁאָלְךָ בִנְךָ מָחָר לֵאמֹר מָה הָעֵדֹת וְהַחֻקִּים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה י״י אֱלֹהֵינוּ אֶתְכֶם. (כא) וְאָמַרְתָּ לְבִנְךָ עֲבָדִים הָיִינוּ לְפַרְעֹה בְּמִצְרָיִם וַיֹּצִיאֵנוּ י״י מִמִּצְרַיִם בְּיָד חֲזָקָה. (כב) וַיִּתֵּן י״י אוֹתֹת וּמֹפְתִים גְּדֹלִים וְרָעִים בְּמִצְרַיִם בְּפַרְעֹה וּבְכׇל בֵּיתוֹ לְעֵינֵינוּ. (כג) וְאוֹתָנוּ הוֹצִיא מִשָּׁם לְמַעַן הָבִיא אֹתָנוּ לָתֶת לָנוּ אֶת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לַאֲבֹתֵינוּ. (כד) וַיְצַוֵּנוּ י״י לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת כׇּל הַחֻקִּים הָאֵלֶּה לְיִרְאָה אֶת י״י אֱלֹהֵינוּ לְטוֹב לָנוּ כׇּל הַיָּמִים לְחַיֹּתֵנוּ כְּהַיּוֹם הַזֶּה. (כה) וּצְדָקָה תִּהְיֶה לָּנוּ כִּי נִשְׁמֹר לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת כׇּל הַמִּצְוָה הַזֹּאת לִפְנֵי י״י אֱלֹהֵינוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּנוּ.

פרק ז

(א) כִּי יְבִיאֲךָ י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה בָא שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ וְנָשַׁל גּוֹיִם רַבִּים מִפָּנֶיךָ הַחִתִּי וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁי וְהָאֱמֹרִי וְהַכְּנַעֲנִי וְהַפְּרִזִּי וְהַחִוִּי וְהַיְבוּסִי שִׁבְעָה גוֹיִם רַבִּים וַעֲצוּמִים מִמֶּךָּ. (ב) וּנְתָנָם י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ לְפָנֶיךָ וְהִכִּיתָם הַחֲרֵם תַּחֲרִים אֹתָם לֹא תִכְרֹת לָהֶם בְּרִית וְלֹא תְחׇנֵּם. (ג) וְלֹא תִתְחַתֵּן בָּם בִּתְּךָ לֹא תִתֵּן לִבְנוֹ וּבִתּוֹ לֹא תִקַּח לִבְנֶךָ. (ד) כִּי יָסִיר אֶת בִּנְךָ מֵאַחֲרַי וְעָבְדוּ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים וְחָרָה אַף י״י בָּכֶם וְהִשְׁמִידְךָ מַהֵר. (ה) כִּי אִם כֹּה תַעֲשׂוּ לָהֶם מִזְבְּחֹתֵיהֶם תִּתֹּצוּ וּמַצֵּבֹתָם תְּשַׁבֵּרוּ וַאֲשֵׁירֵהֶם תְּגַדֵּעוּן וּפְסִילֵיהֶם תִּשְׂרְפוּן בָּאֵשׁ. (ו) כִּי עַם קָדוֹשׁ אַתָּה לַי״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּךָ בָּחַר י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ לִהְיוֹת לוֹ לְעַם סְגֻלָּה מִכֹּל הָעַמִּים אֲשֶׁר עַל פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה. (ז) לֹא מֵרֻבְּכֶם מִכׇּל הָעַמִּים חָשַׁק י״י בָּכֶם וַיִּבְחַר בָּכֶם כִּי אַתֶּם הַמְעַט מִכׇּל הָעַמִּים. (ח) כִּי מֵאַהֲבַת י״י אֶתְכֶם וּמִשׇּׁמְרוֹ אֶת הַשְּׁבֻעָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם הוֹצִיא י״י אֶתְכֶם בְּיָד חֲזָקָה וַיִּפְדְּךָ מִבֵּית עֲבָדִים מִיַּד פַּרְעֹה מֶלֶךְ מִצְרָיִם. (ט) וְיָדַעְתָּ כִּי י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים הָאֵל הַנֶּאֱמָן שֹׁמֵר הַבְּרִית וְהַחֶסֶד לְאֹהֲבָיו וּלְשֹׁמְרֵי מִצְוֺתָו לְאֶלֶף דּוֹר. (י) וּמְשַׁלֵּם לְשֹׂנְאָיו אֶל פָּנָיו לְהַאֲבִידוֹ לֹא יְאַחֵר לְשֹׂנְאוֹ אֶל פָּנָיו יְשַׁלֶּם לוֹ. (יא) וְשָׁמַרְתָּ אֶת הַמִּצְוָה וְאֶת הַחֻקִּים וְאֶת הַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם לַעֲשׂוֹתָם.

Chapter 3

(23) I begged Hashem at that time, saying, (24) "Adonai Elohim, you have begun to show your servant your greatness, and your strong hand. For what god is there in heaven or in earth, that can do like your works, and like your mighty acts? (25) Please let me pass over and see the good land that is beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon." (26) But Hashem was angry with me for your sakes, and didn't listen to me; and Hashem said to me, "Enough; speak no more to Me of this matter. (27) Go up to the top of Pisgah, and lift up your eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and see with your eyes, for you shall not pass over this Jordan. (28) But command Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him; for he shall pass over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which you shall see." (29) So we stayed in the valley opposite Beth Peor.

Chapter 4

(1) Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and to the ordinances which I teach you, to do them; that you may live, and go in and possess the land which Hashem, the God of your fathers, gives you. (2) You shall not add to the word which I command you, and you shall not subtract from it, that you may keep the commandments of Hashem your God which I command you. (3) Your eyes have seen what Hashem did because of Baal Peor; for all the men who followed Baal Peor, Hashem your God has destroyed them from your midst. (4) And you, those who cling to Hashem, your God, are all alive today. (5) Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as Hashem my God commanded me, that you should do so in the midst of the land where you go in to possess it. (6) Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who shall hear all these statutes, and say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people." (7) For what great nation is there, that has a god so near to them, as Hashem our God is whenever we call on him? (8) What great nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? (9) Only be careful, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes saw, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. But make them known to your children and your children's children, (10) the day that you stood before Hashem your God in Horeb, when Hashem said to me, "Assemble the people to Me, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children." (11) You came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to the heart of the sky, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness. (12) Hashem spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, but you saw no form; you only heard a voice. (13) He declared to you his covenant, which He commanded you to perform, even the ten statements; and He wrote them on two tables of stone. (14) Hashem commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that you might do them in the land where you pass to possess it. (15) Take therefore good care of yourselves, for you saw no kind of form on the day that Hashem spoke to you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire. (16) Lest you corrupt yourselves, and make yourself an engraved image in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, (17) the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the sky, (18) the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth. (19) And lest you lift up your eyes to the sky, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the host of the sky, you are drawn away and worship them, and serve them which Hashem your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole sky. (20) But Hashem has taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be to him a people, an inheritance, as at this day. (21) Furthermore Hashem was angry with me for your sakes, and swore that I should not pass over the Jordan, and that I should not go in to that good land, which Hashem your God gives you for an inheritance. (22) For I will die in this land; I will not pass over the Jordan. But you shall pass over and possess that good land. (23) Be careful, lest you forget the covenant of Hashem your God, which He made with you, and make for yourselves an engraved image in the form of anything which Hashem your God has forbidden you. (24) For Hashem your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God. (25) When you shall father children and children's children, and you shall have been long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make an engraved image in the form of anything, and shall do that which is evil in the sight of Hashem your God, to provoke him to anger, (26) I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you shall soon utterly perish from off the land to which you pass over the Jordan to possess. You shall not prolong your days on it, but shall utterly be destroyed. (27) Hashem will scatter you among the peoples, and you shall be left few in number among the nations, where Hashem shall lead you away. (28) There you shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which do not see, or hear, or eat, or smell. (29) But from there you shall seek Hashem your God, and you shall find him, when you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. (30) When you are in oppression, and all these things have come on you, in the latter days you shall return to Hashem your God, and listen to his voice. (31) For Hashem your God is a merciful God; He will not fail you or destroy you, or forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them. (32) For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and from the one end of the sky to the other, has there ever been anything like this great thing or has anything ever been heard like it? (33) Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live? (34) Or has God tried to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, like all that Hashem your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? (35) It was shown to you so that you might know that Hashem is God. There is no one else besides him. (36) Out of heaven He made you hear his voice, that He might instruct you. And on earth He made you see his great fire; and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. (37) Because He loved your fathers, therefore He chose their seed after them, and brought you out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt, (38) to drive out nations from before you, greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as at this day. (39) Know therefore this day, and lay it to your heart, that Hashem He is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is none else. (40) You shall keep his statutes and his commandments which I command you this day, that it may go well with you, and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which Hashem your God gives you, forever. (41) Then Moses set apart three cities beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise, (42) that the manslayer might flee there, who kills his neighbor unintentionally, and didn't hate him in time past. He shall flee to one of these cities and live: (43) Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, for the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites. (44) And this is the teaching that Moshe set before the Children of Israel. (45) These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which Moses spoke to the Children of Israel, when they came forth out of Egypt, (46) beyond the Jordan, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses and the Children of Israel struck when they came forth out of Egypt. (47) They took his land in possession, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise, (48) from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, even to Mount Sion, which is Hermon, (49) and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even to the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.

Chapter 5

(1) Moses called to all Israel, and said to them, Hear, Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I speak in your ears this day, that you may learn them, and observe to do them. (2) Hashem our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. (3) Hashem didn't make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, all those who are here alive this day. (4) Hashem spoke with you face to face on the mountain out of the midst of the fire. (5) I stood between Hashem and you at that time, to show you the word of Hashem, for you were afraid because of the fire and didn't go up onto the mountain; saying, (6) "I am Hashem your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. (7) You shall not make an engraved image for yourself, any likeness of what is in heaven above, or what is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. (8) You shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I, Hashem, your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me, (9) and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love Me and keep my commandments. (10) You shall not take the name of Hashem your God in vain, for Hashem will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. (11) Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as Hashem your God commanded you. (12) You shall labor six days, and do all your work. (13) But the seventh day is a Sabbath to Hashem your God, in which you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your ox, or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or your stranger who is within your gates, so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. (14) You shall remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and Hashem your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm. Therefore Hashem your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. (15) Honor your father and your mother, as Hashem your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land which Hashem your God gives you. (16) You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. (17) You shall not covet your neighbor's wife and you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's." (18) These words Hashem spoke to all your assembly on the mountain out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and He added no more. He wrote them on two tables of stone, and gave them to me. (19) It happened, when you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, that you came near to me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders. (20) And you said, "Behold, Hashem our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. We have seen this day that God speaks with man, and he lives. (21) Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of Hashem our God any more, then we shall die. (22) For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? (23) Go near, and hear all that Hashem our God shall say, and tell us all that Hashem our God shall tell you. And we will hear it, and do it." (24) Hashem heard the sound of your words, when you spoke to me; and Hashem said to me, "I have heard the sound of the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken. (25) Oh that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them and with their children forever! (26) Go tell them, 'Return to your tents.' (27) But as for you, stand here by me, and I will tell you all the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it." (28) You shall observe to do therefore as Hashem your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. (29) You shall walk in all the way which Hashem your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.

Chapter 6

(1) Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the ordinances, which Hashem your God commanded to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you pass over to possess it, (2) that you might fear Hashem your God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments which I command you, you, and your son, and your son's son, all the days of your life; and that your days may be prolonged. (3) Hear therefore, Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with you, and that you may increase mightily, as Hashem, the God of your fathers, has promised to you, in a land flowing with milk and honey. (4) Listen,⁠Listen | שְׁמַע – Though often translated as: "Hear", the connotation is really that one should pay attention and understand (Chizkuni, Abarbanel and Sforno). Israel, Hashem is our God, Hashem is one. (5) You shall love HashemYou shall love Hashem | וְאָהַבְתָּ אֵת י"י – For discussion of what the commandment to "love God" entails, and whether it proscribes an emotion, a thought, or an action, see Ahavat Hashem. your God with all your heart,⁠with all your heart | בְּכׇל לְבָבְךָ – See Ibn Ezra and others that, in Biblical times, the heart was believed to be the seat of wisdom (see, for example, Mishlei 14:33 and 15:14), and that the verse refers to loving God with one's mind and thoughts. Cf. Shadal that the heart refers to one's inner will. and with all your soul,⁠and with all your soul | וּבְכׇל נַפְשְׁךָ – See Ibn Ezra, R"Y Bekhor Shor, and others that here "the soul" refers to one's will and desires (see such usage in Bereshit 23:8), with the connotation being that to love Hashem one must submit one's own will to Hashem's. Cf. Rashi and Rashbam that "נפש" refers to a life source, and that one must love Hashem even if it requires forfeiting your life. and with all your might.⁠and with all your might | וּבְכׇל מְאֹדֶךָ – See Bavli Berakhot 54a that the connotation is: "possessions". This is one of only two places in Tanakh where the word "מְאֹד" (an expression of abundance) functions as a noun rather than an adverb or adjective, and see Ibn Ezra that really the connotation here, too, is simply "love Hashem very, very much". (6) And these words that I command you today shall be upon your heart, (7) and you shall inculcate them in your sonsinculcate them in your sons | וְשִׁנַּנְתָּם לְבָנֶיךָ – See Rashi and others that the verb "וְשִׁנַּנְתָּם" relates to the root "שנן", to whet or sharpen, and that the connotation is that one should teach one's children well and sharply impress these things upon them. Cf. Shadal that the verb relates to the root "שׁנה", to repeat (itself connected to the number "שנים", two) and that the meaning is that one should repeat these things again and again to one's children. and speak of them when you sit in your house and when you go on the way, and when you lie down and when you rise.⁠and when you lie down... | וּבְשָׁכְבְּךָ וּבְקוּמֶךָ – Rabbi Akiva in Mishna Berakhot 1:3 learns from these words that there is a commandment to say the passages of "Shema" each morning and evening. In context, though, the verse refers to learning Torah and speaking of the commandments as a whole throughout the day (see Abaye in Bavli Berakhot 21a and R. D"Z Hoffmann here). (8) You shall tie them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as bandsas bands | לְטֹטָפֹת – For various understandings of the term, see the notes on Shemot 13:9 and 16. between your eyes. (9) You shall write themYou shall write them | וּכְתַבְתָּם – Most commentators assume that the verse refers to literally writing this passage (and its counterpart in Devarim 11) on the doorposts, but see the opinion rejected by R"Y Bekhor Shor that the verse (and the preceding one) is metaphorical, with the idea being simply that one should pay heed to these matters as if they were written on the doorposts. [Compare Rashbam on Shemot 13:9.] on the doorposts of your house and in your gates. (10) It shall be, when Hashem your God shall bring you into the land which He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you, great and goodly cities, which you didn't build, (11) and houses full of all good things, which you didn't fill, and hewn cisterns, which you didn't dig, vineyards and olive trees, which you didn't plant, and you shall eat and be full; (12) then beware lest you forget Hashem who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. (13) You shall fear Hashem your God; and you shall serve him, and shall swear by His name. (14) You shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples who are around you. (15) For Hashem your God in your midst is a jealous God; lest the anger of Hashem your God be kindled against you, and He destroy you from off the face of the earth. (16) You shall not tempt Hashem your God, as you tempted him in Massah. (17) You shall diligently keep the commandments of Hashem your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which He has commanded you. (18) You shall do that which is right and good in the sight of Hashem, that it may be well with you, and that you may go in and possess the good land which Hashem swore to your fathers, (19) to thrust out all your enemies from before you, as Hashem has spoken. (20) When your son asks you in time to come, saying, "What do the testimonies, the statutes, and the ordinances, which Hashem our God has commanded you mean", (21) then you shall tell your son, "We were Pharaoh's bondservants in Egypt, and Hashem brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. (22) Hashem brought great and awesome signs and wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his house, before our eyes. (23) And He brought us out from there, that He might bring us, to give us the land which He swore to our fathers. (24) Hashem commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear Hashem our God, for our good always, that He might keep us alive, as at this day. (25) It shall be righteousness to us, if we observe to do all this commandment before Hashem our God, as He has commanded us."

Chapter 7

(1) When Hashem your God shall bring you into the land where you go to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before you, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you, (2) and when Hashem your God shall deliver them up before you, and you shall strike them, then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them. (3) You shall not make marriages with them; your daughter you shall not give to his son, and you shall not take his daughter for your son. (4) For he will turn away your son from following Me, that they may serve other gods; then the anger of Hashem would be kindled against you, and He would destroy you quickly. (5) But you shall deal with them like this. You shall break down their altars, and dash their pillars in pieces, and cut down their Asherim, and burn their engraved images with fire. (6) For you are a holy people to Hashem your God. Hashem your God has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples who are on the face of the earth. (7) Hashem didn't set his love on you or choose you because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all peoples. (8) But because of Hashem's love for you and His keeping of the oath which He swore to your fathers, Hashem has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. (9) Know therefore that Hashem your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with them who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations, (10) and repays those who hate him to their face, to destroy them. He will not be slack to him who hates him, He will repay him to his face. (11) You shall therefore keep the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command you this day, to do them.
