נושאים לשולחן שבת – פרשת וארא
Questioning Our Assumptions מי נפגע מהמכות – אנחנו נוטים להניח שרק המצרים נפגעו מהמכות, אך ישנם פרשנים שמציעים שבמכות שלגביהן לא מצוין במפורש שהייתה הבחנה בין העמים, סבלו גם בני ישראל.
סיפור יציאת מצרים מוכר מאוד, עד כדי כך שרבים מאיתנו מגיעים לטקסט עם הנחות מסוימות. נסו לענות ביחד על שאלות הבאות:

- מה עומד מאחורי עמדה זו?
- גישה זו משפיעה על הבנת מטרת המכות או את היחס בין תפקיד הטבעי והעל-טבעי בסיפור?
- כמה מכות היו? רוב האנשים היו עונים שהיו עשר מכות ("עֶשֶׂר מַכּוֹת"). עם זאת, לא המספר עשר ("עֶשֶׂר") ולא המילה ("מַכּוֹת") אף פעם לא נמצאים בסיפור ספר שמות, וניתן לטעון מקרה לסדרה הכוללת בין 9 ל -12 פלאים.

לאורך כל תחילת ספר שמות אנחנו קוראים כיצד פרעה סירב בעקשנות לתת לבני ישראל לצאת ממצרים. התורה מסבירה שהוא סירב כי ה' הקשה את ליבו.
