האם וידוי ותשובה בהכרח מביאים כפרה? בפרשת נצבים, התורה מרמזת שכן, וה' מבטיח שאם נחזור אליו בתשובה, הוא ישוב אלינו, ירחם עלינו, ויקבץ את גלויותינו.  אולם, מיד לאחר מכן, בפרשת וילך, התורה מתארת כיצד הכרת העם שעונשו בא מאת ה' תוביל, לא לסליחה, אלא להסתר פנים נוסף! האם ייתכן שהקב"ה דוחה את התשובה של האומה?
