Positive Obligation

Every man is required to perform kiddushin during his lifetime.

Independent Mitzvah

Kiddushin is an independent commandment, and is separate from the other obligations of creating a family (such as the actual marriage ceremony or having children).

Part of the Marriage Mitzvah

There is a single commandment which includes both kiddushin and the actual marriage ceremony.

Part of the Procreation Mitzvah

The commandment to procreate includes the entire process which enables the procreation, starting with kiddushin.

Conditional Obligation

Kiddushin is an independent obligation, although one is only obligated to fulfill it if one desires to marry.

Detail of Other Obligation

There is no direct commandment to perform kiddushin, but rather it is a component of the definition of certain other mitzvot.
