Introduction

Yonah's prayer is similar in style to many psalms in the Book of Tehillim.  In fact, almost every line of the prayer has a parallel somewhere in the book:

(ב:ג) קָרָאתִי מִצָּרָה לִי אֶל י״י וַיַּעֲנֵנִי (קיח:ה) מִן הַמֵּצַר קָרָאתִי יָּהּ עָנָנִי בַמֶּרְחָב יָהּ
(ב:ג) מִבֶּטֶן שְׁאוֹל שִׁוַּעְתִּי שָׁמַעְתָּ קוֹלִי (כח:ב) שְׁמַע קוֹל תַּחֲנוּנַי בְּשַׁוְּעִי אֵלֶיךָ1

(ב:ח) וַתָּבוֹא אֵלֶיךָ תְּפִלָּתִי אֶל הֵיכַל קׇדְשֶׁךָ. (ה:ח) אָבוֹא בֵיתֶךָ אֶשְׁתַּחֲוֶה אֶל הֵיכַל קׇדְשְׁךָ בְּיִרְאָתֶךָ.
(ב:ט-י) מְשַׁמְּרִים הַבְלֵי שָׁוְא חַסְדָּם יַעֲזֹבוּ. וַאֲנִי בְּקוֹל תּוֹדָה (לא:ז) שָׂנֵאתִי הַשֹּׁמְרִים הַבְלֵי שָׁוְא וַאֲנִי אֶל י״י בָּטָחְתִּי.
(י) וַאֲנִי בְּקוֹל תּוֹדָה אֶזְבְּחָה לָּךְ אֲשֶׁר נָדַרְתִּי אֲשַׁלֵּמָה (קטז: יז-יח) לְךָ אֶזְבַּח זֶבַח תּוֹדָה... נְדָרַי לַי״י אֲשַׁלֵּם נֶגְדָה נָּא לְכׇל עַמּוֹ.
