Parashat Mattot – Opening Questions

Why did Moshe find Reuven and Gad's request to settle the lands east of the Jordan problematic? Was his reaction justified?
Why isn't the tribe of Menashe mentioned throughout the negotiations regarding the eastern bank of the Jordan, if in the end they, too, settle there?
From what did the Midianite spoils need to be purified? Are these laws related to contamination by the dead, idolatry, or kashrut?
