One of the most troubling theological issues is when innocents are punished for the sins of others.  The problem comes to the fore in Yehoshua Chapter 7, when Akhan takes from the consecrated spoils of Yericho resulting in defeat at the Battle of Ai and the death of thirty-six soldiers.
