Parashat Shelach – Opening Questions

  • Where did the spies go wrong? If they were asked to report about the land, why were they punished for presenting their conclusions?
  • What route did the spies take? Did they really scout out the entire land and return to Moshe in only forty days?
  • The Torah states that on seeing tzitzit, a person will be reminded to observe all of Hashem's commandments. How do tzitzit accomplish this goal?
  • How does the story of the spies as told in Bemidbar compare to the account in Devarim? How are the differences to be understood?
  • What does "פֹּקֵד עֲוֹן אָבוֹת עַל בָּנִים" mean? Are children really punished for their parents' sins? How does this manifest Divine justice?
