Specifically on body – Permanence of sign symbolizes that the covenant is permanent (Shadal). לפי ספורנו, הברית נעשית דווקא באיבר המין כי איבר מקושר בנצחיות וכך מסמל את נצחיות הברית.

למה דווקא ביום השמיני – שד"ל מביא כמה סיבות. אחד כדי שהורי הילד הנימול יוכלו לשמוח ביום מילתו, ועד יום השמיני האשה לטמאה לבעלה.עוד סיבה, כי הערלה נחשבת סוג טומאה וכך האם והבן נטהרים מטומאתם באותו יום.
