Possible Meanings
The noun חֶדְוָה appears in only two Biblical verses. There are two possibilities as to its meaning:
1. Joy
- Biblical verses – This is the common interpretation of the word in its appearance in Nechemyah 8:10 "Don't be sad; for chedvat Hashem is your strength," and it matches the context there – see Ibn Ezra, Ralbag, and Malbim. This is also the way most commentators explain Divrei HaYamim I 16:27 – "Honor and majesty are before him, strength and chedva are in his place" – see Midrash Tehillim 20, Radak, Ralbag, and Malbim.
- This meaning matches most of the usages of the forms of the verb חדה.
- Cf. Assyrian hidutu – joy.
2. Majesty, glory
- Biblical verses – This interpretation of the occurrence in Divrei HaYamim I 16:27 is supported by both the context there as well as the parallel verse in Tehillim 96:6 where תפארת substitutes for חדוה.
