Parashat Bemidbar – Summary

  • Parashat Bemidbar describes the establishment and organization of the Israelite camp around the Mishkan in preparation for traveling to the Land of Israel.
  • National CensusChapter 1 opens with a command to conduct a detailed census of all of the tribes of Israel except Levi.
  • Encampment FormationChapter 2 describes the tribal marching order and camping formation in the wilderness, with the Mishkan at the center of the encampment.
  • Appointment of the Levites – In Chapter 3, the Levites are selected to replace the firstborn for service in the Mishkan, guarding its vessels and assisting the priests with their Mishkan duties. All Levite males in each of the three Levite families are counted from the age of one month and older and assigned their specific responsibilities.
  • Appointment of KehatChapter 4 details the specific duties of the Levite family of Kehat in transporting the holy vessels of the Mishkan.
