Parashat Pinechas – Summary

  • Parashat Pinechas describes some of the preparations for the Children of Israel's imminent entry into the Land of Israel

  • Reward and Revenge – The Parashah opens in the middle of Chapter 25, with the aftermath of Israel's sin at Baal Peor. Hashem rewards Pinechas for his zealous loyalty in killing the sinners Zimri and Cozbi, and then instructs Moshe to wage war against the Midianites who incited Israel to sin.
  • Tribal CensusChapter 26 records a family-by-family census of Israel, conducted for the purpose of apportioning the Land of Israel once it is conquered.
  • Tzelofchad's Daughters and Appointment of Yehoshua – In Chapter 27, Tzelofchad's daughters successfully petition Moshe to receive their deceased father's inheritance in the Land of Israel. Hashem then instructs Moshe to prepare for his death, and Moshe passes the leadership mantle to Yehoshua.
  • Daily and Holiday Sacrificial ServiceChapters 28 and 29 describe the daily burnt offering and the special additional offerings brought on Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh, and each of the festivals. The first verse of Chapter 30 then concludes the Parashah with Moshe communicating all of these laws to the nation.
